Greetings!
February is a great month for contemplating shades of RED. When we think of February, one can't help but think of Valentine's Day and love and the color red.
I hope you enjoy reading below what Sherwin-Williams colormix 2012, a designer's resource for up-coming color trends, has to say about red. Red is a bold, exotic color selection and needs to be used with confidence.
Not quite sure of the color you are looking for to make that dramatic change in your home? Maybe you are leaning toward red but not sure of the shade- royal grape tones, russets or vibrant orange. Read my tips below for avoiding the 5 Most Common Mistakes People Make When Selecting Color. And feel free to call if you need help.
Learn more about how I collaborated with one client to select the perfect colors for their dream home. Located in historic Fort Worth, this project is featured in the Houzz Tour on Feb 6 and in their newsletter on the 8th.
Happy Valentine's Day,
Dona

COLORMIX 2012 by Sherwin-Williams: REDS
You have opportunities all around you to use color to create a mood, reflect your personality, as well as draw inspiration from nature to inspire your color choices. Color-mix is a good reminder of the connection in our use of color, nature and culture.
| | Walls: SW 6621 Emotional |
"RED is the color of love, fire and the earth's molten core, and it stirs raw emotions ranging from the deepest passion to the softest femininity. This saturated palette includes hues of brilliant flowers and glowing embers. It isn't a single red, but a deep gradation of fuchsias, red-oranges, violets and delicate pinks.," says Jackie Jordan, director of color marketing for Sherwin-Williams.
Ever wonder why RED works so well a dining room or kitchen? Red stimulates the appetite. Also causing the retina to vibrate if used in it's deeper, pure tones, it is wise to only use in "guest" bedrooms where you don't want them to stay forever; and softer, more muted, muddy tones in other bedrooms.

Houzz Tour-A Fresh Take on Traditional in Texas
We are so excited to have this Fort Worth 1926 residence featured on Houzz's homepage. Thank you, Becky Harris, for doing such a lovely job of writing about this project and working with this client.
"When the owner of this home toured a condominium with interiors designed by Dona Rosene, she made sure to pick up her card and clung to it for more than two years. When she bought her dream house, she pulled out Rosene's card and gave her a call. Full story...

5 Most Common Mistakes People Make Selecting Color
Selecting color is a key factor in the success of a project. However, it can be tricky. Avoiding these 5 most common mistakes will simplify the process.
1. Selecting in the store. Color changes in different lighting so it must be done in the room it is being used with the natural and artificial light sources, in day and night light. I paint samples on a 2 x 2 foam board that can be moved around the room and viewed from different angles
2. Selecting it on a different color background. Color absorbs and reflects the colors surrounding it as well as underneath it. Kilz is great for covering existing paint.
3. Selecting from a tiny sample. A color will change from a 1" square to a 10 ft wall.
4. Fear of color may lead you to paint just one wall in the deeper color for drama but may off-balance the room and/or chop it up. In this case, go slightly lighter on all the walls, creating a warm, enveloping effect. Using it on the ceiling or halfing the color with white, really does this and actually makes the space feel more expansive.
5. Getting too many opinions causes confusion. We respond to color on an emotional level so it's very personal. I always recommend clients collect pictures of rooms they are drawn to then see what color is used to create that end result. I love Houzz.com because it's a quick and easy way to create your own ideabooks and vision for your next project. |

Loving Color: Enjoy the Sweet Taste of Raspberry
This client's living room was featured in an article on the color raspberry and serves as an example of why color selection is more complicated than it would seem. A luscious, Chinese red, that has a pink base as you can see where the natural light is shining on the wall under the window.
"If the color raspberry were a person, I would describe her as confident, bold, fashionable and sweet. Raspberry brings a bold vibe to any room. When added in small doses, the space becomes a bit more sassy. And when used as the main color, raspberry becomes the life of the party (room)!" Full story... |
