Greetings!
I am writing this from the mountains of Colorado and reminded of the magnificent times we live in with our limitless technological capabilities. With a click of a button, this can be sent all over the world.
I often get asked how the world of Interior Design is affected by the Internet and all the "do-it- yourself" makeover shows. I believe the "reality" TV shows have exposed Interior Design to the masses and increased awareness of the importance of one's surroundings. However, these shows create an illusion of quality, timelessness and style and are best considered for what they are: entertainment. You do not see all the people behind the scenes and the long days of insane activity that creates the seemingly instant and effortless makeovers. In fact, I often get calls from people who have been disillusioned by this "more, faster, cheaper" mentality. Your home or office deserves a more thorough and comprehensive design plan.
Architectural Digest surveyed their readers about their experiences of working with a professional designer and presented the results to the Dallas Design community recently. The highlights are below. The designers present appreciated the affirmation that interior design, while a luxury business, has immense value and is, as my clients frequently say "money well invested".

WHAT'S "HOT" IN THE DESIGN INDUSTRY
Feng Shui - Part 2
In our last issue we learned that Feng Shui (pronounced fung-SHWAY) is the 5,000 year old practice of balancing energy or chi in homes and businesses for harmony, happiness and prosperity. Many find this a helpful approach when there is something you would like to create more of in your life or to release since Chi is stimulated and nurtured by change.
When you think about breathing life force into your space the
ideal is for it to move gently. Think good traffic flow, uncluttered, good lighting and correct use of color. Any natural materials enhance energy. Pets (well-groomed) or candles add nice fire energy. Wood energy comes from plants and anything made from wood. Popular water features, glass and mirrors bring in water elements. If energy feels stagnant, wind chimes, musical instruments and any metal objects will get it moving. Earth energy can be added with natural stones such as marble, terra cotta even ceramics and concrete. Even symbolic representations like photos are effective.
This is just a very general look at Feng Shui. We sometimes get so serious about all these rules. I agree with my teacher Trisha Keel of Tomorrow's Key that if something makes you happy when you look at it, it's good Feng Shui!

Q: We are updating our Master Bath which has the large sheets of mirror over the vanity. How can we update this without loosing the openness caused by all the mirror?
A: Framed mirrors in the bath are stylish and vogue but sometimes clients desire the openness created with more mirror. One of my favorite tricks is to layer a decorative mirror over a wall of mirror as shown in these 2 photos. It creates a luxurious layering effect, provides depth and breaks up the large expanse of glass.
It is best to have a glass professional
or an experienced contractor install this as it requires a special small, very sharp drill bit to cut the glass without breakage. The result is very dramatic.
Thank you for your feedback on this newsletter. Let us know what you would like to see more of in future issues.
