Is our backbone like the piano scale? Yes, says Chiropractor June Weider in her book, "Song of the Spine." June's book is a great overview of sound healing and she delves into her own intense work with tuning forks and the spine. The tone of the nervous system is the basis for heath and she calls her approach:  bone toning. This is the application of specific frequencies to the vertebrae in order to generate sympathetic resonances that release the embedded harmonics that lie within the spine. Her reseach shows that the 12 bones of each spinal curve (cervical, thoracic, and lumbar)  are in direct relation with the 12 semitones of an octave, specifically, the first octave below middle-C with a frequency range of 130.81 to 233.08hz. As the vertebrae recognize their own resonance, the fork can help correct a subluxation directly and also helps the spine to relax for hand adjustments.

Tuning forks can be a part of every chiropractors tool kit. Randy is meeting many acupuncturists who are investigating the use of tuning forks for acupuncture as well. 

Here at my treatment room, I am finding that simply placing my naturally tuned lyre on a clients back has a deeply relaxing effect on the spine. The notes seem to melt the musculature and the tones are abosrbed just where the spine needs them. Our spines have been compared to the piano, the great mythical harps and lyres...and now we can see the correlation. We are musical beings and the spine can be the base for tune-ups!
