November 2010

Dear ,Family

Thanksgiving and Halloween are over and I'm starting to think about Christmas plans...interesting how we so look forward to gatherings that bring loved ones together.  Here's a sneak peek at the men in my life from our fun Thanksgiving weekend (yes, there was lots of golf involved).

Activity in the real estate market has slowed down considerably with prices, sales and volume of listings down in October and will likely remain flat until early in 2011.

There are some great opportunities out there right now, so if you or someone you know is thinking about buying...now is a great time!

IN SUPPORT OF
THE

Since opening its doors in 1986 as a Crisis Nursery only,  the Cottage has developed into a multi-service facility.

Today, the Society offers four unique programs to the community including:
  • Crisis nursery - a 24 hour, 365 day per year shelter for children newborn to age eight. Parents can leave their children at the nursery for up to 72 hours during periods when they need to deal with a family crisis. Twelve beds are available for children at no charge to the family.
  • Community Respite Program - volunteer daycares and day homes partner with the Society to provide temporary daytime and overnight care for children. An In-home Infant Respite Program provides support in a family's home to assist with newborns and their siblings up to the age of six months.
  • Healthy Families & Family Liaison- provides opportunities for families to build on their strengths. In Home Visitors will help parents through regular visits, education and referrals.
  • Brenda's House - provides a 14 bedroom shelter and support program for family's currently experiencing homelessness.
Royal LePage Benchmark recognized the need for this Society and passionately supports their programs. Our goal for 2010 is to raise $20,000 through a variety of fundraising events, including; realtors donating a portion of their commission fees, garage sales, and office events. Last year, the Cottage was able to assist one child for one day at a cost of approximately $200 per child. Our donation of $20,000 would provide care for 100 children to ensure that they are safe and free from harm!

Can you help?  For this upcoming holiday season, we are having a TOY DRIVE, and collecting cash donations to purchase new toys for the children for Christmas. We would love your support!  Along with any donations of gently used clothing (size 10 and under), and we are collecting up until November 17th. Any clothing donations can be dropped off to the office or call me and I will gladly pick them up. If you would prefer to make a cash donation, let me know and I'll send you a form.

Your support during this time of year is appreciated, and your contributions make a tremendous difference in the lives of these families and children!

Attention All Air Travellers!

Seat Expert logoChose The Best Seat On Your Upcoming Flight.

Many people pay little attention to their seat choice. It's usually about aisle versus window. However, there are a lot of other factors to consider. You can explore some of those factors at Seat Expert. Simpy enter your flight number or the plane type. You get a layout of all the seats on the plane. Click on a seat to get information about the location. It might be a high-traffic area...it might get too much light from the kitchen for sleeping. Choosing the right seat will make your flight a little more comfortable!

Make sure you check out the Suite Seats - here is proof that all seats are not created equal! There are photos of some of the best first and business class seats in the air today.

Real Estate Update

Calgary Buyers' Remain Cautious
Sales of million dollar plus homes a bright spot in 2010 market

Calgary, November 1, 2010
- Home sales in the city of Calgary were down month-over-month in October 2010, showing signs that buyers still remain cautious, despite signs of economic recovery.  Year-over-year sales continued to trend lower in the month of October, according to figures released today by the Calgary Real Estate Board (CREB®).

The number of single family home sales in the month of October 2010 shrank by 7 per cent at 888, compared with September 2010, when sales were 958.  The number of condominium sales for the month of October 2010 was 310. This was a decrease of 15 per cent from the 366 condominium transactions recorded in September 2010.

Year-over-year, the number of single family homes sold in October 2010 in the city of Calgary were down 31 per cent.  In October 2009, single family home sales totalled 1,285. Condominium sales saw a decrease of 48 per cent from the same time a year ago.  In October 2009, condominium sales were 601.

"Buyers remain cautious, perhaps waiting to feel a little more confidence in Calgary's economic growth and their own job security," says Diane Scott, president of CREB®.

"We believe economic recovery will build momentum into 2011 as the outlook for oil and gas and other sectors continues to improve. This, coupled with low interest rates and improved affordability, should eventually help to stimulate Calgary's housing market," adds Scott.
