VACATION
Are you getting enough?

As I prepare to take my own vacation, I thought it appropriate to visit this very concept.  Historically, Members of Congress left the heat and humidity of Washington, DC behind for the long summer recess.  This tradition continues, although abbreviated.  And, as Congress departs,Noya Chiropractic Email much of our city clears out.  This may appear inefficient or unnecessary to some.  However, as a culture we do not take enough vacation or time to rest and recharge our batteries.

Vacation is vital for the human spirit.  It is the time where we most often enjoy the fruits of our labor, where we get to connect with the people closest to us, where we live out our passions, and most importantly, re-connect to ourselves.  We do not have to be in the Bahamas, Hawaii or Tahiti to be on vacation.  Vacation is merely a retreat from one's everyday life -- usually, you do what you want to do, not what you have to do.  It may be a weekend at a bed in breakfast, or staying home for a day and turning off you email and blackberry.  In past generations, work life had more definite parameters and a formal vacations was less necessary.  However, in our global economy and with our technological age of cell phones and blackberries, it has become nearly impossible to have any time for ourselves without taking a formal vacation.

Sometimes we may feel that we are even too busy at work to take a vacation.  However, vacation is a process essential to productivity and freshness.  Distance aids in gaining perspective.  It is difficult to tell the height of a building when you are standing next to it.  However, as you back away from the building and increase your distance, you gain perspective that makes it easier to tell the height.  The same holds true for our lives.  As we take time away from our work we gain perspective on our work and life -- this allows us to make larger gains in less time.  Enjoy your vacation!

Four Agreements

"The Four Agreements" is a wonderful book by Don Miguel Ruiz.  Ruiz is a descendent of the Toltec tradition and imparts some of their wisdom in his text.  The text is simple but enlightening.  What I appreciate most about this book is how easy it is to begin applying.  There are only four agreements to live by and they are easy to remember.  As you start to apply these teachings it is quickly realized how complex and connected they are to our lives and happiness.

The Four Agreements are:

1. Be Impeccable with your Word: Speak with Integrity. Say only what you mean. Avoid using the Word to speak against yourself or to gossip about others. Use the power of your Word in the direction of truth and love.

2. Don't Take Anything Personally
Nothing others do is because of you. What others say and do is a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When you are immune to the opinions and actions of others, you won't be the victim of needless suffering.

3. Don't Make Assumptions
Find the courage to ask questions and to express what you really want. Communicate with others as clearly as you can to avoid misunderstandings, sadness and drama. With just this one agreement, you can completely transform your life.

4. Always Do Your Best
Your best is going to change from moment to moment; it will be different when you are healthy as opposed to sick. Under any circumstance, simply do your best, and you will avoid self-judgment, self-abuse, and regret.

  RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Quinoa Burgers

1 cup of quinoa
2 cups of water (or chicken/veggie broth or coconut milk)
1 onion, mincedNoya Chiropractic Email
3 cloves garlic, minced or 1 tbsp garlic powder
1 red bell pepper, chopped
2 celery stalks, diced
2 carrots, diced
About 1 cup of almond butter
1 inch ginger, peeled and minced
½ cup of bread crumbs or crushed crackers (optional)
Olive oil

1. Rinse the quinoa under cold water to remove any dirt and the bitter outer layer.
2. Add to a pot with two cups of water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer until all water is absorbed, about 15 minutes.
3. Meanwhile, heat 1 tbsp olive oil over medium heat and add onions and garlic. Cook for 3 minutes.
4. Add the red pepper, carrots and celery and continue cooking until veggies are soft, about 5 minutes.
5. In a large bowl, combine the cooked quinoa, veggies, almond butter, ginger and bread crumbs. Continue adding bread crumbs or almond butter until the mixture sticks together.
6. Form the quinoa mixture into small patties.
7. Cook in some olive oil, about 5 minutes on each side, until nicely browned.

(Tip: If you want to save a step, add the veggies without cooking for a crunchier texture.)
