JMS Presents an Original Interpretation of "Alice in Wonderland"
For the past few months, the students of Joliet Montessori School have been busy preparing for the spring play. "Alice in Wonderland" will be presented this Saturday, May 15, at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. at the indoor theatre at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park, 201 West Jefferson at Bluff Street.
The original interpretation of the play was written by the JMS Adolescent class. Our students have served as assistant directors, stage managers, and members of the publicity, costume, set and prop committees, as well as being the actors.
Our primary-age students who attend the play will be invited to come up on stage during one scene and join the cast for the "Lobster Rock." A "Lobster Rock" lesson will be held 15 minutes before show time, so come early! Since the primary students will be portraying underwater creatures, they are encouraged to wear bright colors or tie-dyed shirts.
Between performances, the JMS Orchestra, after-school music students of Ms. Paulette Velazquez, will perform their spring concert. It will take place about 12:45, so stay after the play or come early for a real treat. Our string ensemble ranges in age from five to ten years old.
Tickets for the play are $5 and are available either through the school office or at the door. The Adolescent Class will also be selling raffle tickets for a chance to win an iPod Touch. All proceeds will go towards their end of year trip.
Thanks to the JMS families who have helped "get the show on the road." A special thanks to Jamie Benson, production coordinator, and Lori Carmine, director, and their assistants Karen Barowsky, Vicki Hartmann, and Suzannah Walter for the months of Thursday afternoon committee meetings and supervision.
To get to Bicentennial Park from school, go south on Weber. At the intersection of Rt. 30 (Plainfield Road) and Rt. 7 turn left onto Rt. 30. Follow Rt. 30 for about 4 miles. Rt. 30 then angles right and becomes Center Street. Take Center Street to Jefferson Street. At Jefferson, turn left (by Wendy's). The Park (Bluff Street) is now two blocks away on your left- just before you cross the bridge. Look for the entrance and marquee on the left. |

End of Year Picnic
It's hard to believe the annual End of the Year picnic is less than a month away. Mark your calendars for Fri, Jun 4 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. at Inwood Park, just off the corner of Jefferson and Essington. We are in need of volunteers to help make this an enjoyable evening for everyone. If you are interested in helping, please contact Vicki Hartmann at v_hartmann@yahoo.com by Fri, May 14.
Opportunities available are: 3 families to help set up the picnic area. You would be responsible for picking up the supplies at the school and delivering them to the picnic location, starting the grills, hanging a JMS banner, and setting the tables up for our potluck. We ask that you arrive 30 - 45 minutes early.
3 families to help clean up the picnic area. You would be responsible for packing up the supplies and returning them to the school, making sure the grills are out, and clearing the picnic area.
2 families to be greeters at the event. You would be responsible for setting up an area to greet JMS families to the event and help with name tags. We ask that you arrive 15 minutes early.
Not able to volunteer? We also are in need of some donations of paper plates, plastic silverware, napkins, plastic cups, and charcoal. |

| A View of the Montessori Classroom
The Adolescent Environment
This month, we're looking at specific program elements unique to the Montessori Adolescent classroom:
** The curriculum should offer a broad view of the world, emphasizing ecological interdependency, the historical development and inter-connectedness of ideas and events and an international, multi-cultural perspective.
** The curriculum should be organized as an "integrated thematic approach" connecting separate disciplines of the curriculum into studies of the physical universe, the world of nature and the human experience.
** Montessori adolescent programs do not emphasize academic competition. The program should evaluate students on a logical, objective basis. Students should not be graded on a curve but rather should be evaluated individually against clearly stated academic objectives through a wide variety of authentic assessment techniques, which may include portfolios, long-term projects, self-evaluation and standardized testing.
