A View of the Classroom
"The Prepared Environment"
There are several principles dedicated
to the preparation
 of our classroom environments:

Freedom within limits:  Children are free to choose work within established boundaries.

Beauty:  Materials are complete
and in good repair, attractive and elegant, designed to attract interest and hold attention.

Classroom objects represent reality and nature:  Children use real sinks and dishes instead of 'play' ones.  Materials are made of substances ocurring in nature (ie., bamboo baskets instead of plastic ones) and there is only one set of each material in order to instill and reinforce the concepts of patience and sharing.

The Director:  Adult interaction in the classroom is limited and directors are specifically trained and certified to guide each child and the class.

JMS Book of the Month
"The Montessori Way:  An Education for Life"
by Tim Seldin and Paul Epstein, PhD
"What is education for?  How we answer this question is critical for the future of our children, our nation and our world.  Yet too often it gets lost in debates about standards, testing, and other procedural reforms that treat education as something to be done to children rather than for and with them.  'The Montessori Way' shows us that we can, and must, go back to basics - to the real purpose of education as drawing forth from each one of us our full human potential."

Elementary Bake Sale

All proceeds will benefit Haitian earthquake victims.

Greetings!

Our annual JMS Winter Open House is scheduled for this Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Most of our new students come to us through the recommendation of current JMS families. Therefore, we hope that you will use this opportunity to invite friends who have inquired about our school to join us for this introduction to Montessori.

Following the Open House, registration will be open to new families for the 2010-2011 school year.  If you have not yet submitted registration materials for your own family, please do so as soon as possible. We need to evaluate class lists for available placements for incoming students.  Please contact the office if you need a new registration materials packet.

It's exciting for all of us to watch the adolescent house take shape! Interior painting and decorating will be beginning soon. Thanks to you all for your generosity in helping to bring this dream to fruition. When the house is complete, we will have opportunities for all of our families to come tour.

We hope you will enjoy our long President's Day/Institute weekend (which begins February 12).

Ms. Jan

Join us for our Winter Sunday Afternoon Family Event at the Joliet Park District's Multi Purpose Center on Sun, Feb 21 from 2 - 4 p.m.  This event is designed to allow all of us to run off the winter energy we've been storing, while spending the afternoon with other JMS families.

Child care will not be provided. Please plan on staying at the event with your children.  Food is not permitted in the gym area, bring your own water.  If you have jump ropes, hula hoops or other fun things for the kids to use in the gym, we encourage you to bring them along. The park district will provide us with sports balls.

We are still looking for a few volunteers to help with clean up (stay until the area is cleaned up like the way we found it). (Thank you to the Kozlowski family for volunteering to help set up!)

If you are able to help, contact Lauren DeKlerk at (815) 955-4087 or
fitzspark@sbcglobal.net by Feb 5.
