The "essential conversation" is the crucial exchange that occurs between parents and teachers.  Not limited to only two times a year, it is the foundation of the family-school relationship.  A book "full of wisdom and insight."

Sunday Afternoon Family Game Day

Join us this Sun, Jan 10, from 2 - 4 p.m., for a fun afternoon of board games.  This event is designed to give our children a chance to get out of the house during these cold winter days and spend some time with friends outside of school.  It also provides our parents with the opportunity to meet each other, or catch up after the the busy time of the holidays.

We have reserved a room at the Joliet Public Library, Black Road Branch, for this event.  From the school, take Weber Road south to Black Road.  Turn right (west) on Black Road.  The library is on the north side of the street past Essington Road.

Please bring a board game or two to play with your children, and/or for your children to play with friends.  Please do not bring any handheld electronic games.

There is no charge for this event, but the library snack shop will be open for refreshments.

Winter Community Service Project

In February, we will be collecting items for the Women and Family Recovery Center (WFRC), a division of MorningStar Mission.

The WFRC assists people in re-entering the community by providing a supportive environment in which they can begin to take charge of their lives. According to the Will County Continuum of Care Gaps Analysis, there are 269 persons in homeless families with children, of whom 153 who have no shelter on a nightly basis. If you are not a Will County resident, you have access to only 72 hours of emergency shelter. Additional shelter care, after the first 72 hours, would be available after a waiting list period of several weeks to a few months. In the current shelters in Will County, 22% of the bed space is available for families, and 78% is available for singles. The current unsheltered population consists of 70% families and 30% singles. The Mission's new shelter will have 75% of the beds designated for families and 25% designated for singles.

The items the Recovery Center is in need of are regular sized shampoo, bar soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, combs, brushes, and hair bands and scrunchies. Start looking for sales now and consider purchasing for this community service project. Drop off dates will be announced in a future newsletter.

Are you able to deliver our donations in February?  Morning Star Mission is located at 350 East Washington Street in Joliet.  Please contact Kelli McDonald at kelli.mcdonald@comcast.net for more information.

Merchant Support

There are many opportunities available to JMS to earn money from your everyday purchases. Throughout the year we will be highlighting the programs we participate in through the newsletters and on the school website. If at any point you have any questions about these programs, please contact Karen Barowsky at kpbarowsky@comcast.net.

We ask that each month you submit your box tops in an envelope marked BOXTOPS and return them with your signed Communication Envelope to the office.

Chances are there is at least one product in your home that participates in the Boxtops for Education program. By clipping these box tops and sending them in to school, we earn 10 cents per box top.

Please take a moment to check out their website www.boxtops4education.comBesides clipping box tops they also offer a rebate program for online shopping that benefits our school. Youmust register on their site, and some restrictions apply, but if you shop online, consider going through this site to your favorite online retailer and helping JMS earn more through this program.

These boxtops add up fast.  Just this week we received the check for our last submission in the amount of $184.86.
Thank You!

Emergency/Weather Closing

Please listen to WJOL, AM 1340 for school closing information.  We are also registered with the Emergency Closing Center (www.EmergencyClosings.com).  Each parent should exercise his/her own judgment as to the advisability of driving in severe weather.  The school will be open when we feel a majority of parents can safely bring their children to school.
