Save the date for Bloomingdale Chamber's third annual 50 Men Who Cook.  50 men from our community will prepare sample size portions of their favorite dish for attendees to sample and judge. It's an evening of great food, live music and raffle prizes at Hilton Chicago Indian Lakes Resort.  Proceeds from the event benefit the wellness programs at Bloomingdale elementary schools.  If you would like to become a sponsor, volunteer as a cook, donate a raffle prize, or purchase tickets, call the chamber office at 630-980-9082 or go to  50 Men Who Cook. Tickets are $25 per person.

A special thanks to our presenting sponsor, Adventist GlenOaks Hospital. Thank you also to Master Chef sponsor Bloomingdale Bank and Trust (formerly Old Town Bank and Trust) and grocery sponsor Caputo's Fresh Markets.

Georgene Geils

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of long-time Bloomingdale resident Georgene Geils. When BAWIB was looking for a successful woman to name our annual Women of the Year award after, Georgene stood out as the logical choice.  Georgene and her husband Wally were pioneers in the community when they opened Econo-Mart in Bloomingdale in 1958.  In fact, Econo-Mart literally put Bloomingdale on the map after delivery trucks had trouble finding the store in what was then a small farm community.  In addition, Georgene served as a role model and mentor to young women through her work with Bloomingdale schools, churches and politics.  Georgene never missed our annual Women of the Year dinner.  We will miss her but are grateful for the example she has left for future generations.

Date Change for Sept. BAWIB Seminar
The BAWIB calendar reflects a Bloomingdale Area Women in Business seminar scheduled for Tuesday September 27.  The date of this seminar has been changed to Tuesday, October 4.  Please change your calendars accordingly.  The topic is "Knowledge is Power" and will be presented by Julie Keating, Director of Adult Services at the Bloomingdale Public Library.  The seminar will be held at the Bloomingdale Library at 101 Fairfield Way.  Continental breakfast and networking starts at 7:30 AM.  The program will run from 8 to 9 AM. Additional information will be sent in September.
Job Skills Workshop
Today's job market is tough.  Distinguishing yourself from the pack can be the hardest part of the process. Congressman Peter Roskam will be hosting a free Job Skills Workshop on Friday, August 26 at Medinah Banquets in Addison.  The event will take place from 9:30 AM to 12:30 PM. In addition to conducting information sessions on writing resumes, cover letters, and job search techniques, there will be tables set up in a separate room for representatives from local staffing agencies and workforce development groups such as Illinois workNet and workNet DuPage.  For more information and to register, go to Roskam Job Skills Workshop
WDSRA Director Jane Hodgkinson Retires
Ask Jane Hodgkinson what inspired her to spend the past 30 years creating recreational opportunities for people with special needs and she'll tell you it's the stories she hears.  The recently retired executive director of the Western DuPage Special Recreation Assn. recalls one mother whose daughter had lost her leg to bone cancer.  Medical personnel told her daughter what she wouldn't be able to do, but WDSRA told her what she could do.  The girl went on to travel the world, compete in paralympics and win a scholarship to the University of Illinois.
When Jane joined WDSRA in 1981, the agency was just five years old, had a full-time staff of five and offered a handful of programs that served 240-250 participants.  Under Jane's direction, WDSRA now offers 15,000 different activities, camps, trips and sports annually to 5,000 children and adults with physical and mental special needs in 10 communities in the surrounding area.  We wish Jane well in her retirement.
