MCHS's AnEmail

Welcome to the February 2010 issue of MCHS's new e-newsletter. February is Adopt A Shelter Rabbit month. Is a rabbit the right pet for your family? Read to see!

MCHS has teamed up with three local dog day care and boarding facilities to offer a series of safe (and warm!) doggie play dates. For a small donation (to benefit MCHS's life-saving programs), your dog can romp around with new furry friends and meet other owners. Bring your dog to the brand new series of indoor doggie play dates. It's safe winter fun and activity is important for your dog's health and well being.

We hope you will enjoy reading this and will forward it to your friends.
Rabbit Care 101

Feb is Adopt a Rabbit MonthRabbits are affectionate, intelligent and curious. They can get along with cats and dogs and be litter box trained. However, they require special care. If you are thinking about getting a rabbit, do your research first. Read more about Rabbit Care 101.

"Spay Day USA" Is Feb 23rd

Vet and dogWhen you adopt a pet from the Montgomery County Humane Society, one of the most important ways you demonstrate you're a responsible pet parent is to spay or neuter your new friend. This safe and simple operation offers many benefits: You play a direct role in saving animals' lives by reducing the number of homeless or unwanted animals in the community. In addition, your new companion benefits from calmer behavior and less risk of certain diseases.

Many shelter dogs and cats are already altered. If you need to make arrangements to have your pet altered, MCHS offers three helpful programs:
* For pets adopted directly from the shelter
* For pets adopted from other sources, and
* Low-income assistance for those who adopt pets from other sources.
Verizon's "Push Pause" Features MCHS

David PooleMCHS volunteer coordinator, David Poole is featured on Push Pause, a local program produced by Verizon. For customers who have FiOS, the Push Pause segments run on Channel 1, usually between noon and 3 pm, one segment after the other, mixed in with some local news and sports.  In this segment, David talks about the variety of animals available for adoption at MCHS, and shows off Stitch, a very sweet black cat, and Lorna, a lively pit-boxer mix -- both looking for homes.
Happy Tale

I adopted Sabrina (Jan was her shelter name), a soft black bunny with a white spot on her nose, last fall. Over the past twenty years I have taken in strays, rescues and fosters, but I have never seen a animal so happy to come home. On her first day living with me, Sabrina followed me around the house. She likes to be in the same room with me and will frequently jump up on the sofa next to me. I have never had a bunny become so attached to me. She is also very attached to my older male bunny; they are the best of friends
