What $1.7 Billion in Dynamics R&D Means to Government Contractors

Paul and I just returned from the Microsoft Worldwide Partner Conference in Houston.  As we've noticed each year, the Dynamics product line continues to shine as one of Microsoft's lynchpins for growth.

Here are some highlights from the conference:

Microsoft announced that it will spend $1.7 BILLION on Dynamics research and development this year! Microsoft is committed to bringing to market the best enterprise applications in the world and Dynamics NAV will be one of the prominent product lines in that strategy. This is exciting for fast growing government contractors who are looking for the Microsoft alternative for its financial management needs.

Microsoft is committed to bringing down the costs of enterprise software. For example, a Microsoft Dynamics ERP implementation averages one-fifth the cost of a comparable Oracle implementation. Business intelligence application pricing is similarly competitive.

Upcoming releases of Dynamics NAV will feature broader and deeper integration with other Microsoft technologies such as SharePoint and Web services. For example, Dynamics NAV users will be able to access all reports via the web. This is a huge value add for HQ-based government contractor employees that support project leaders around the world.

Email me or call me to discuss what else was discussed at the conference.

Three Reasons the Department of Defense is So Focused on Outsourcing

This article was originally published in the July 2008 issue of
Contract Management and was based on a research paper written by contracts manager Scott Schofield and Ryan Mahoney.

There have been many reasons offered for why the Department of Defense (DOD) is currently focusing so much of its attention toward outsourcing. In the end, they can all be summed up into three reasons:
  • Moving military members into warfighting positions
  • Creating more efficient and better performing organizations
  • Reducing costs

Contractors Who Outgrow QuickBooks Look to Dynamics NAV

High-growth government contractors who are using QuickBooks find out early that they need to migrate to a more flexible and functional project accounting and financial management system. While QuickBooks may be sufficient for small government contractors that are in their formative stages, it does not adequately scale and meet requirements of companies that hold more than one contract, especially if those contracts are managed away from headquarters.

Growing contractors need a system that will scale with them and provide the flexibility to provide effective reporting and DCAA compliance. Companies above $2-5 million in revenue have pushed the limits of QuickBooks and now need to choose a system that helps them more effectively manage and account for their contracts. (More)
