Greetings!

Wednesday's cloudy skies and cooler temperatures were perfect for getting into our two hoop houses to weed and harvest.
Lemon Cucumbers and Malabar Spinach use the vertical space in the greenhouse
Windcrest Farm Hoophouse
Using the hoops to train the cucumbers, Malabar spinach and tomatoes upward makes maintenance and harvesting much easier. The warmer temperatures in the houses give us a jump start on the season in the spring and extend the harvests later into the fall. These in-house crops are shielded from overhead rain so we see far less disease on these plants than the plants out in the field. We must work these growing areas by hand so we always get a wonderful crop of "volunteers" - plants that spring up from the previous season's seeds. This year the house pictured above has a wonderful crop of self-seeded dill and beautiful zinnias in addition our planned Red Russian Kale, an assortment of peppers, eggplant, basil, heirloom lemon cucumbers, Malabar spinach and our first attempt at celery.

Hearing a gentle rain on the plastic yesterday was wonderful, but when lightning began to flash in the distance, it was time to get out from under the metal hoops and head for the house!
Feed the soil that feeds the plant that feeds you!

At Windcrest Farm, we use three products to provide the best nutrition stress resistance for our certified organic transplants and field crops - pure worm castings, a mix of mineral and plant based fertilizers, and sea kelp powder added to our irrigation and foliar sprays.  Many of you have tried the Black Castings and our Mary's Mineral Mix in your garden this year with great results. Now we are excited to offer the third component of our plant nutrition program in a convenient and economical home gardening size.

  • Promotes seed germination
  • Excellent food source for beneficial fungi in the soil
  • Increases root growth and crop yields
  • Increases nutrient uptake and improves plant stress resistance
  • Improves plant tolerance to temperature extremes
  • Increases resistance to fungi and insects
  • Contains naturally occurring antibiotics
  • Can be used in hydroponic and drip irrigation systems
  • No worry about burning plant roots - compatible with all plant nutrition programs

Sea kelp fertilizer can be applied to the roots or foliage of the plant. When applied as a foliar spray, sea kelp helps the plant uptake certain elemental nutrients through the leaves. When applied to the roots, sea kelp increases the number of plant beneficial microorganisms found in the rhizosphere (the soil region subject to the influence of plant roots and their associated microorganisms). To maximize these effects, sea kelp should be applied the roots early in the plant's life cycle and later applied as a foliar spray.

PLEASE NOTE: Sea kelp is not curative but used as a preventative, it is most effective when applied before the plant or crop experiences any particular stress. Repeated, low dose applications show the optimum results as opposed to fewer, high applications. Treatments during and after any stress will help the plant recover from stresses such as disease, insects and fungi attacks, drought and cold temperatures.

What makes sea kelp fertilizer so beneficial to plants?
Sea kelp contains naturally occurring plant growth regulators, namely cytokinins, gibberellins, and indoles. In addition, it contains essential micronutrients such as iron, copper, zinc, molybdenum, boron, manganese, and cobalt for healthy plant growth and development. Seaweed fertilizers also contain a chelating compound called mannitol, which chelates micronutrients into forms that are readily available for plant use.

CONCENTRATED POWDER: 8 oz. of powder creates up to 84 gallons of liquid fertilizer
