Tonya volunteers at Windcrest Farm to learn about fresh food from the ground up!
Greetings!

Ray and I hope the holidays are all you hope them to be and that you have a safe and peaceful passage through this season. I just looked at the weather forecast and it looks like we may have some snow flurries on Christmas Eve. How fun would that be! It would certainly add a touch to the holidays and bring us into the last week of the year with a bit of natural decoration to match the store-bought decorations of the season.

This Tuesday marked Ray's last (hopefully!) treatment for bladder cancer, which was discovered in October. This experience has been revealing in so many ways. We are thankful for our friends and their support, and for the wonderful people at Matthews Presbyterian Hospital for their gentleness and humor during these difficult treatments.

We are certainly not wishing our time away, but Ray and I are looking forward to saying goodbye to 2009. As many of you know, this year has been full of challenges for us as well as for many people in our local and global communities. We know the future holds promise and we are keeping our eyes on the prize.

Thank you for sharing this year with us!

The Organic Agriculture and Products Education Institute (Organic Institute), a non-profit organization, has launched "Organic. It's worth it.", a consumer education and marketing website. The website provides information on a variety of topics of concern to families who are interested in choosing organic products. Among these topics are organic's connections to healthy kids, nutritious meals, food people trust, clean water and a healthy future.
"The mission of this campaign is to answer consumer questions about organic with the clear message that organic is worth it in every way from health care and economics to farming and the environment. It will increase consumer trust, knowledge and purchase of organic products," said Christine Bushway, president of the Organic Institute and executive director of the Organic Trade Association (OTA), the sponsor of the campaign.

The Associated Press has found confidential contracts "detailing Monsanto Co.'s business practices" that "reveal how the seed giant is squeezing competitors, controlling smaller companies and protecting its dominance over the multibillion-dollar market for genetically altered crops." Monsanto owns the patents on corn and soybean seed that is altered to be resistant to the company's Roundup herbicide. Monsanto then licenses that genetic technology to other seed companies.
