Greetings!
It may still be cold outside, but it is a great time to start your edible landscaping for 2009. Many folks are starting a garden for the first time and are are busy doing their homework. Others are trying their hand at starting their vegetable garden from seed. We are planning our garden layouts and our greenhouse is full of baby broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, cauliflower and herbs for early, cool season planting.

Blueberry bushes are dormat now and this a great time to plant a blueberry patch or add a new variety to your established landscape.

On Saturday, February 28th, we will bring several varieties of blueberry bushes as well as Red Raspberry plants to the Matthews Community Farmer's Market. Stop by at 8:30 for a BlueBerry Bush Care Demonstration.

Shiitake Mushroom Workday
Want to learn how Shiitake Mushrooms are grown, meet other Shiitake fans and lend a hand preparing mushroom logs for this season?

Join us for our annual Shiitake Mushroom Workday on Saturday, March 7th from 10:00 to 5:00 as we inoculate native oak logs with two strains of spawn from the NC A&T Mushroom Project (hot wax involved!). Bring a pair of gloves and your curiousity.

Blueberry Varieties - NC Grown

Blueberry Varieties Available at Windcrest Farm

1 gallon plants are 2 years old - $9.00; 2 gallon plants are 3 years old - $14.00.

Southern highbush varieties need less winter chilling to produce a crop and cannot tolerate temperatures much below zero degrees.

Rabbiteye bushes thrive in zones 7 through 9 and are known for their heat and drought tolerance.

Most blueberry varieties are self-fertile, but the largest fruits and yields are produced by cross-pollination. For this reason, it is advisable to plant at least two different varieties whose blooming periods overlap.
