Greetings!

As we prepare for the coldest days of the winter we are looking forward to Spring. It is less than 10 weeks until Spring officially arrives on March 10th. Seeding has already started in the greenhouse with flat leaf Italian parsley, raab, cilantro, lettuce, broccoli, swiss chard, Vidalia onions, and assorted flowers. We will continue seeding cool weather crops during the coming weeks for early Spring planting. We will begin bringing these plants to the Winter market as soon as they are ready.

The date for seeding warm weather crops is close at hand. The average date for the last frost in Union County is April 12th although we have gotten killer freezes late in April. With our two hoop houses, we are able to plant veggies a bit earlier than in the field. We are preparing the hoop house beds now that our winter lettuce is done.

Like other businesses, our greenhouse business uses spreadsheets to keep us on track with seeding and planting. Below is a snapshot of one schedule we are using this Spring. If you would like to create your own schedule, you can download a copy of our spreadsheet. If you would like to join us in the greenhouse and learn about seed starting and seedling care, please sign up for our popular Seed Starting Workshop.

NEW from Windcrest Farm - Grafted Heirloom Tomato Transplants
The best of two tomato plants in one!
IDEAL FOR:
  • Growers who are unable to rotate crops in order to prevent build-up of soil borne diseases. These growers range from greenhouse or high-tunnel growers to home gardeners with limited garden space.
  • Organic growers who do not rely on chemical disease controls and want built-in disease resistance in heirloom tomatoes.
  • Conventional growers who want to lessen the reliance on chemical disease controls.
  • Growers who want a longer harvest season without the expense and labor of planting multiple tomato crops to compensate for plant loss due to disease.
