Greetings!
The best view is from the top of the tractor at Windcrest Farm
There are lots of "signs of the season" here at the farm. Ma & Pa Barn Swallow were feathering their nest at the barn this morning (that's a picture of last year's brood on the right) and wild bunnies were grazing in the pasture in front of the greenhouse last night. Word must have gotten out that our Organic Gardening class was seeding lettuce!

Market season started last Saturday, which marked the end of my "clean truck" season. Now perlite - those white popcorn-like pieces you see in potting soil - will share my ride until the last plants are delivered in the Fall. I hope you will join me in Matthews on Saturday to see what wonderful plants left traces of soil in my truck during the ride to the Market.
Heirloom Tomato for Your Garden
Heirloom Tomatoes at Windcrest Farm
German Queen Tomatoes

We harvested over 100 lbs. of these tomatoes last year and just seeing this picture of one of our harvests makes my mouth water! We have the heirloom, potato-leafed German Queen plants ready for your garden as well as for our fields. The tomato has a rich sweet flavor and few seeds. It's a nice meaty slicer perfect for those 'mator sandwiches.

31 varieties of heirloom tomatoes are available from Windcrest Farm.
Patio Gardening
Windcrest Farm Garden BowlsA little dirt goes a long way!

You don't need a plot of land to grow your own fresh vegetables. With enough sun, water and a suitable container, many vegetables can be harvested from a container garden. Growing a salad garden with vegetables such as carrots, radishes and lettuce as well as tomatoes and peppers is a perfect way to start a container vegetable garden. Many people are adding edible landscaping to their patios and porches by using a variety of containers that provide good drainage and adequate room for growing plants. Container vegetables will require more attention to watering than in-ground plants but they require virtually no weeding!

Products We Use - Organic Fire Ant Control

Three seasons ago we used landscaping fabric to help suppress the weeds around our tomato and pepper plants. It did a fairly good job at keeping the weeds down but did a GREAT job at hiding the fire ants that had set up a city under the fabric. When we took the fabric up (as required each season by organic "rules") we searched for and found this OMRI approved solution that really worked without harm to people, plants and pets. Learn more...

The opening day at the Market was brisk with business and a very cool breeze. It was so good to see familiar faces, old friends, new vendors and lots of people supporting local agriculture. Welcome to the 35 new subscribers to our newsletter!

I hope to hear from you!
Sincerely,

Mary Roberts
