A belated wish for a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year! 2010 was indeed memorable--not only did licensing and new state and federal laws require our attention, the economy continued to play a major role.
However, it was a good year for Silverton. We grew our correspondent lender platform to offer you the best products and rates; and added new staff and locations to serve you better.

10. Now that we have to verify just about everything about everybody for loan approval, it gives us more opportunities to learn about our clients (thanks to all who were able to forward their fourth grade report cards this year)!
9. We get to be in an industry that is talked about a lot. (OK, so sometimes there are expletives when describing the mortgage industry--but hey, at least people are talking!)
8. Historically low rates anyone?!
7. If you mention to people you are in the mortgage business this year, they give you a hug, ask if you are OK, and will usually buy you a drink (or three).
6. We got to learn a new term this year: Robo signers, able to sign thousands of documents a day while fighting the forces of evil...
5. We get to help people retire early (going from 30-year loans, to 20 years, 15 years and sometimes even 10-year loans). How cool is that?!
4. We get to turn everything into an acronym: APR, TIL, GFE, HVCC, FHA, HUD, RESPA, LTV, DTI...
3. Have I mentioned REEEEEEALLLY low rates?!
2. Now that we are all officially licensed (felt a little odd getting licensed in the 14th year of your career, but hey, we do what the state tells us to), we won't have to take any more state tests!
And the #1 Reason: Going into our 13th year in business, and there is still nothing better than going to closing and being a part of someone's "Big" day--the day they purchase their first house, the day they move into the school district they've always wanted to get their kids in, the day they refinance into a shorter term and retire 10 years earlier than planned, the day they refinance and are able to start the basement renovation (finishing that "man cave" for the wide screen and pool table) or the day they refinance and lower their payments hundreds of dollars a month and can start saving again while they struggle to get back on their feet after a tough few years in this economy. Their Big Day is our passion--it makes it all worthwhile!

It's all in a name - January | |
Most people know that January was named after the Roman god Janus. But, did you know that Janus was the god "of the doorway" or gatekeeper, often represented as a two-faced mask signifying beginnings and endings?
Originally, the Georgian Calendar had only 10 months, but was expanded to include January and February sometime around 700 BC by the Roman ruler Pompilius, who gave it 30 days. It is said Julius Caesar gave January the extra 31st day.
The Saxons called January "Wolfmonth" or "wolf-monath" because in the cold deep snow nights during the month wolves would come out of the forests and into villages hunting for food.
It is legend that Charlemagne called the month "Wintarmanuth" and the Czechs call the month "leden," which means ice month. (Those of us who just experienced the recent snow/ice storms would agree with that name!)

The Brunswick Office joined the Silverton Team in August 2010. Leighton Johnson, Branch Manager, has been in the mortgage business since early 2004. Leighton comes to us from a regional bank where he was the overall sales leader, a VP and Mortgage Sales Manager. He has been lending money to the residents of southeastern Georgia in one capacity or another since 1993.
Gretchen Johnson is a Senior Mortgage Originator and has both originating and processing experience since 2005.
Conrad Smith is a formally educated business professional with a Series 7 license and more than a decade of experience in the financial sector. He is a native of the Golden Isles and is active in the community; he also coaches basketball for a local private school. Conrad has decided to take his career to the next level by joining the Silverton Brunswick Team as a Loan Originator. Our processor, Kevin Funderburk, was born and raised in Brunswick and knows the area well. He is new to the mortgage industry and is enjoying the challenge of his work at Silverton.
Team Brunswick is excited about the office location on Scranton Connector which is located right behind the Brunswick Mall. We hope to GROW the team as the word spreads about the service that we can provide at Silverton Mortgage.
