Lionheart
The Latest from The Children's Room

Greetings!
This summer, we painted our house a color called lionheart yellow. When we painted patches of different colors beside our front door, kids kept picking lionheart yellow as the right paint with the right name for our house.
We liked the name so much, we decided to name our newsletter LIONHEART. The lion represents courage, and the heart represents what binds us... We invite you to read the latest updates from The Children's Room and we hope you enjoy Lionheart: where courage and community come together.

Walking Together on a Fine October Day
"It was one of those fine October days free from summer's heat and haze but not yet gripped by autumn chill."
(Richard Greene)

True Story Theatre 9/23
Genuine. Honest. Trustworthy. Authentic. True.
Do these words appeal to you? If so, you won't want to miss our exciting September date with True Story Theatre. This innovative theatre ensemble has a talent for presenting true stories, and they have agreed to help The Children's Room as our community pauses to collaborate and create a "vision" for our future together, as part of our strategic planning.
A group of improvisational actors will help bring stories from The Children's Room to life. They will listen deeply as we take turns describing events and emotions we have gone through while supporting grieving children and teenagers, and then they'll act out the stories for us.

Trips to Alabma and Oklahoma Taking Part in Two National Conferences
In June, lots of good ideas emerged when Executive Director Barbara Clarke and Program Director Donna Sharff traveled to the National Symposium of Children's Grief Support.
The three-day Symposium took place in Birmingham, Alabama. Barbara went early, as a newly elected director on the Board of the National Alliance for Grieving Children, the organization that oversees the National Symposium.
Having a chance to inspire each other and to learn alongside people from all over the country was an exciting opportunity.

Summer Program Stories Trusting, Learning, and Just Having Fun!
This summer, a lively houseful of children age 6 to 13 took part in The Children's Room first-ever summer program. Children came to the house for creative art projects, outdoor activities, and to play with other kids who've experienced the death of a loved one. Many activities were meant to build a community where kids could count on each other and feel safe sharing their stories.

 Our Yellow House
Have you been by the house lately? The color on the outside of the house is now "Lionheart Yellow." In addition to house painting, all kinds of renovations and home repairs are underway.
Our children's garden is flourishing, thanks to seeds sown and flowers grown. Along with playing in the yard during the Summer Program, children have also been cultivating their love of plants and flowers alongside our front walk. Come see the vine house and the big circle of sunflowers. Scattered throughout the garden, you will find a pathway of steppingstones. Each steppingstone is a one-of-a-kind-kid-creation, with a unique selection of colorful sea glass and shells pressed into cement around a handprint.
