Greetings!

Considering the dark and stormy weekend, today's Advent "O" antiphon seems especially timely this year (don't know what the "O" antiphons are? click here).

"O Rising Sun,
splendor of light eternal and sun of righteousness: Come and enlighten those who dwell in darkness and the shadow of death."

I hope you all weathered the weekend's blizzard safely.

There are still a few days left of Advent, and I'm sure you all are ready and waiting for the coming of Christ Jesus on December 25th! Here are a few other, smaller, things you also might want to be ready and waiting for:

  • The Diocesan House will close for the holidays on Christmas Eve, Thursday December 24th. We will re-open Monday January 4th.
  • eRISEN will skip an issue due to the holidays, and resume its normal schedule in January.  The next submission deadline is Tuesday January 12th, 2010. Click here to submit an event.

If you haven't taken a look lately, we have posted a few news articles on Bishop Zawo's stay on the Ezo and RI Blog. Also, we've posted photos of the December 5th Advent Confirmations on our facebook page. Go take a look, even if you are not a facebook member.

Blessings this holiday season,

Ruth Meteer
Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island

Hartford Seminary: Innovation, Social Change, and the Emerging Future of American Congregations
When: Date: Monday through Wednesday, January 4-6, 2010
Where: Hartford Seminary 77 Sherman Street Hartford, CT 06105
Description: Much of the recent conversation on "secularization" among social scientists or "postmodernism" and "the emerging church" among church leaders is an attempt to reflect on social change and its impact on religious structures. This special course takes "change" as a fundamental, yet highly negotiated, dynamic of congregational life. This is an essential leadership program for all pastors and other religious and lay leaders. Dr. Gerardo Marti is the L. Richardson King Assistant Professor of Sociology at Davidson College in Davidson, N.C. After 15 years in local church ministry, Marti become deeply engaged in sociological scholarship at the intersection of congregations and social change. He is currently conducting new research which includes a wide-ranging reflection on politics in relation to "the emerging church," "the evangelical left," and "the new evangelicalism." Marti received his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California.

30 hour famine logoEPISCOPAL CHARITIES UPDATE
"They Need Our Help...We Need Yours."

We continue to give thanks and gratefulness to our volunteers who are working hard to encourage people in their parishes to participate in the wonderful work of Episcopal Charities.  We commend and appreciate our donors for their commitment to this important mission.  Together you are making a significant difference in the lives of our neighbors across Rhode Island who are in fragile situations and living on the edge.

Letters have been sent to those who have already given a gift this year.  We are asking for these donors to consider a second gift.  These are unprecedented times for Episcopal Charities, and the thousands of people your donation helps.  Commitments have been made to many agencies that help those who need it most.

To meet these commitments we are hoping that those who have not yet made a contribution will join us in this effort and those who have given might consider helping a bit more.

Please think about all the good your gift can do to make a difference.  Join with others across our diocese to help Christ in healing the gaps, hurts, and brokenness in thousands of lives.

Campaign Update:
As of December 2, 2009, pledges are $409,153.  That's only 82% of our $500,000 goal.

There's still time to give and help!

Need a Special Gift for a Special Someone?
You can give a gift to honor someone who is special to you, someone who has done something nice for you, as a memorial remembrance, or in recognition of an anniversary or birthday, and accomplishment or just to show you care. We will let that person know that you are thinking of them.

Holiday time is a time of thanksgiving.  It's important to reflect on our own blessings and help others weather these difficult times.

Pray. Give. Encourage Others.  Be Joyful and Thankful!
Wishing you and yours a
Blessed, Healthy and Safe Holiday Season
