Faith and Arms in a Democratic Society: A Working Conference on Religion in the MilitaryWhen: Fri, November 13, 5pm - Sat, November 14, 7pm Where: Yale Divinity School (Friday evening) & Yale Law School (Saturday) Description: Jointly sponsored by Yale Divinity School and Yale Law School. Over the last several years, the role of religion in the armed forces has become increasingly contentious in ways that implicate constitutional concerns as to both the Free Exercise and Establishment Clauses of the First Amendment. At the same time it creates confusion for active duty chaplains and policy makers who are charged with providing spiritual and religious support in an intentionally pluralistic community. The result has been to turn what should be a source of spiritual support and a constructive component of National Defense personnel policy into a source of seemingly endless litigation and divisiveness. The purpose of the proposed program will be to explore aspects of these problems in a setting that facilitates both understanding and mutual respect, and attempting to determine how current circumstances fit with the constitutional design.
