Creativity, Change, and Conflict Course When: June 8-12, 2009 from 3:00-7:00 pm daily Where: Location on the EDS campus TBA Description: Creativity, Change, and Conflict, an Episcopal Divinity School mini-course taught by The Rev. Dr. William Kondrath, offers church and agency leaders an approach for creatively addressing and resolving conflict in their church or organization. "By integrating creativity into the course, we begin to have a "whole health" approach to interventions, rather than only dealing with problems," says Kondrath. "The place where we start is: What would a church look like, what would you see happening, if creativity-rather than liturgy or education or social justice is what characterized your church? What would happen if we took Genesis seriously? We are created in the image of God-and "in the beginning" God is creator." Students will learn systems theory, methods for analyzing and intervening in congregations and agencies, and methods for addressing conflict creatively. The course will have a strong practical component with case studies and "lab" experiences. People will be invited not only to think outside the box, but to feel and act in ways that foster their own growth and the learning of the whole group. "Open the Skies to a Better Tomorrow, Help Lighten the Burdens of the Less Fortunate"
Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers for their great work. It has been just four weeks since our last Speaker Sunday and pledges total $195,000 toward our $500,000 goal for 2009. This is right on target with this time last year. If you haven't made a contribution yet and would like to, you can contact your Parish Chairperson or contact the Episcopal Charities Office at 275 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02903, 274-4500, ext. 234 for Peggy and 233 for Jack. Your Episcopal Charities Dollars at Work The Autism Project of Rhode Island is a lead agency for the support of individuals with autism, their families and the many professionals who work to support and educate them. One of their key programs is Move, Think, Create and Communicate their summer camp which will be going into its seventh summer ('09). They are looking forward to hosting close to 100 children for two weeks in August. This is an important activity for the campers, but also vital respite for families. Children with autism are kicked out of typical summer camp, after-school or social situations because they can be overwhelming for the children. Their opportunities for social learning and interaction are limited and often the children stay home with no social interaction all summer. The camp was designed to include the many specific supports necessary for autistic children of all abilities to succeed. The camp is highly structured, visually supported with schedules across the day and individualized. Staff ratios are low and where necessary 1:1 support is provided. These supports create a calm, quiet, predictable environment for success. It's also a safe haven where campers will not be ridiculed or bullied for their differences. For more information contact: Ms. Joanne G. Quinn, 51 Sockanosset Cross Road, Cranston, RI 02920.
