"Open the Skies to a Better Tomorrow, Help Lighten the Burdens of the Less Fortunate"
This is the theme for the 2009 Episcopal Charities brochure, soon to appear in your mailbox. Training sessions for Parish Chairpersons will begin shortly. There will be three sessions in different parts of the state.
March 15 & March 22 are our scheduled "Speaker Sundays", where a representative from one of our funded agencies will be available to speak in your parish and help kick-off the Campaign. Parish Chairs will also be available to take your pledge. When your Parish Chair calls on you, please think of all the good your gift will do to help needy Rhode Islanders. We ask you to count your blessings and bless those less fortunate. More than ever, they need our support As we begin our 2009 campaign, remember that WE ARE ALL CALLED TO SHARE IN SACRIFICE TOGETHER, to serve those most vulnerable among us. Despite the strains we face in a harsh and weakened economy, we remain ever hopeful that by God's grace you will prayerfully consider your gifts and joyfully contribute to our mutual efforts. This is truly a time when our faith - what we believe and profess - is seriously tested. Much is needed, and we can do it together! Thank You for Continuing Bishop Higgins' Vision

Life Choices-
Big Sisters of Rhode Island has, for over forty years, fulfilled a special mission: to improve the self-esteem and personal potential of vulnerable girls. Life Choices is their curriculum-based group program that teaches young girls how to make healthy life choices by giving them the facts about their bodies, health risks and relationship issues, and teaching them decision-making and communication skills. Life Choices is offered to Latina girls at Progreso Latino, a multi-cultural social service agency in Central Falls. Latina girls are at even greater risk for academic failure, teen pregnancy, and domestic and teen violence than their Caucasian peers. Their bilingual bicultural Spanish Program Coordinator facilitates group sessions paying close attention to the specific needs and interests of Latina girls helping them to work though challenges and learn how to make the choices that will ensure academic success and help them steer clear of risky behaviors like teen pregnancy and aggression.
