THE GOSPEL IN THE NATIVITY STORIES: DISCOVERING THE DEEPER MEANINGS IN MATTHEW AND LUKE
An afternoon with Martin Smith St. Martin's Church in Providence, RI invites you to an afternoon tea with The Rev. Martin L. Smith on Saturday afternoon, December 6 from 4 to 6PM.
Well-known throughout the Episcopal Church as preacher, writer, educator and theologian, Martin will outline what contemporary scholars are uncovering about the original significance of the nativity stories. Strip away the Christmas cuteness and discover how creative the evangelists were in shaping them to communicate the radical message of the gospel. Martin's most popular books are "The Word is Very Near You," "A Season for the Spirit," "Reconciliation", and his most recent work, "Compass and Stars" He travels extensively in the United States, Canada and Europe: preaching, leading retreats, parish and diocesan renewal events, and giving lectures and seminars. He has also served as Chaplain to the House of Bishops. Martin's lifelong interest is forging a contemporary spirituality that is in dialogue with tradition and 'loves the questions' posed by new knowledge and the challenges of post-modern life. Trained as a theologian at Oxford, Martin was ordained in 1970. After several years in parish ministry he joined the Society of St. John the Evangelist, the Anglican Communion's oldest religious order for men. He moved to the USA in 1979. After many years in leadership in the order, he relinquished his membership and moved to Washington in 2002 where he now serves as Senior Associate Rector at St. Columba's. Martin will also be the guest preacher at both the 8am and 10am services on Sunday, December 7. St. Martin's is delighted to welcome him as part of our celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Rector's ordination. The public is cordially invited to both events. After Martin's presentation there will be time for tea and further conversation. St. Martin's is located at 50 Orchard Avenue on Providence's East Side. For more information, please call 751-2141 or visit www.stmartinsprov.org

St. Luke's Christmas Concert Brings Music from Around the World to East Greenwich
St Luke's Episcopal Church musicians will offer an international selection of Christmas music and carols at their annual concert Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 4 pm. The eighty five musicians who make up St. Luke's Canterbury Choir, St. Cecilia Choir, Angel Choir, and Jubilate Ringers welcome guests Valerie Nicolosi, vocal soloist, and Frank DeLuise, clarinet soloist. The musicians are directed by Priscilla Adams Rigg. Enjoy the joyful ringing of handbells, the beautiful harmonies of many lands, and the fellowship of celebrating Christ's birth together in song. Cookies and conversation follow in a reception after the concert. Located at Peirce and Church Streets, East Greenwich, St. Luke's is handicapped accessible and ample parking is available.
St. Luke's Music program is an artistic gem of the West Bay, comprised of three vocal choruses, handbell choir and chime choirs, and instrumentalists. The music department involves 85 professional and amateur musicians from ages 3 through 80. Associated with the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM), based in Salisbury, England, it is considered a model among U.S. Episcopal churches in the musical and liturgical education of children and adults. We invite musicians at all proficiency levels to join us, and welcome all who love sacred music traditions to come, listen, and share the joy of musical worship.

2008 EPISCOPAL CHARITIES UPDATE
May we share all God's blessings in this Season of Thanksgiving.
Each year, as we get closer to Thanksgiving, we take time to reflect on our blessings and remember all the things that we should be grateful for. We are thankful for our health and the health of our families. We are thankful to have a safe place to live, to have enough to eat, money to pay the bills, and fill our cars with gas. We are blessed with the good health to be able to play with our kids and help them do homework. We are grateful that we can go to the doctor when we are not well and have access to medicine. We are fortunate to have time to relax, watch TV, read a book, or spend time with friends.
Well, that's the way it should be. Yet, during this economic crisis and high unemployment, it will be difficult for many to be thankful. Many will not have a job. Many will lose their home or have no place to rent. Many cannot buy food, pay for heat or gas. Many will lose their health benefits or be unable to pay the pharmacist for medicines.
With the work or our dedicated volunteers and generous donors, Episcopal Charities has been able to lessen this burden.
We are very thankful.
On behalf of the Board of Trustees, we want you to know that you have been a gift to us. We wish to thank you for all the special gifts that have been given and the outstanding efforts that have made to fulfill the Episcopal Charities Mission. Because of you, social service agencies from Woonsocket to Westerly, Aquidneck to Apponaug will have food, heat, shelter healthcare, and other basic and special needs for people in fragile situations.
Together, we are keeping this great tradition and mission alive.
We have a tradition of gathering in November for the Episcopal Charities Annual Celebration to say 'thanks" to so many for their efforts. In light of local and global financial difficulties, the Board, Campaign Committee and staff have decided to apply the expense of this year's celebration toward grants to social service agencies where commitments have already been made.
The Campaign Update: As of November 23, 2008, pledges total $460,000 - 92% of our $500,000 goal.
Have you made your contribution to Episcopal Charities this year? Our goal is to contact every household in every parish.
If you have not participated yet, just think of all the good your gift will do for so many. Please join with others across our diocese to help Christ in healing the gaps, hurts, and brokenness in thousands of lives. YOU can be a BRIDGE between their aspirations and accomplishments!
We hope that at this time of thanksgiving, you
Here's how you can help: · PRAY DAILY. Pray daily for our sisters and brothers in their situations of adversity, misfortune, poverty, despair, or loss. Ask Jesus to lead your heart to a faithful, joyful, responsive and generous response. · GIVE GENEROUSLY. You can give to honor someone who is special to you, someone who has done something nice for you, as a memorial remembrance, and anniversary or birthday. · ENCOURAGE FELLOW PARISHIONERS TO PARTICIPATE. If you have not supported Episcopal Charities before, consider being a NEW PLEDGER by joining with over 6,000 households across Rhode Island. · BE JOYFUL AND THANKFUL! Praise God for the healing work and ministries of Charities, for His blessings, miracles, and love that shine through our hands, our gifts, and our work together.
