COMMISSION ON MINISTRY
Offering 2008-2009 Discernment Program
Are you hearing a call to ministry?
Once again, the Commission on Ministry is happy to come to you with our Discernment Program for the coming year. This is a wonderful opportunity for adult members of the Body of Christ in Rhode Island to reflect and grow in their faith. It is also the first step in the process leading to ordination for the diaconate and the priesthood.
The program is very similar to the one offered last year. As a result of feedback we received from last year's participants, we are including a presentation on lay ministry, in addition to the presentations on the diaconate and priesthood.
The first session is an Introductory Dinner that is being held at the Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Avenue, East Providence, on Thursday, November 13th at 6:00 PM. All clergy have information on the program, so please speak with your parish clergy if you are interested. .

CONFIRMATIONS
The '08 Confirmation Schedule is as follows:
Saturday, December 6th: Advent Confirmations at the Cathedral of St. John, Providence
Rehearsal Please plan to have the candidates arrive one hour prior to the service for a walk-through of the liturgy. The candidates should have a 3x5 card on which are printed their first and middle names (no last names, please) in type large enough for the Bishop to read. It is also helpful to indicate in smaller print, somewhere on the card, which rite the candidate will be receiving, i.e. confirmation, reception, or re-affirmation. Vestments Clergy will vest (white) and process and should be prepared to assist with the distribution of communion. Parish Register Be sure to bring your parish register for the Bishop's signature. Lectors and Collection The deaneries or host parish will need to provide ushers, and someone to take the collection and may provide lectors. It is especially appropriate to ask confirmands to present the gifts. Candidates should not, however, be asked to serve as lectors. Reception The reception is the responsibility of the deanery and host parish. Certificates Will be available at the event.

MEP Update: The Cathedral of St. John Very Reverend Harry Krauss, Cathedral Dean From the PPS email Newsletter http://www.ppsri.org/
At the 218th Convention of the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island held on October 25, Bishop Geralyn Wolf noted: "The Cathedral, Diocesan House, Hallworth House, and the Edwards Homes sit on a beautiful square just beyond the heart of the city, and down the street from the State House. I believe that this block is an extraordinary resource, and have met with leaders from the resident institutions to brainstorm regarding the present and future use of the property. We have many ideas to explore in the coming months". A committee, chaired by the Cathedral Dean, the Very Reverend Harry Krauss, has been formed of the Cathedral Chapter and representatives of the other constituents of the square to explore these ideas. In addition, the committee has been authorized to consult with PPS, government and neighborhood agencies, planners, architects, and developers as their work unfolds. The committee is determined toward positive and exciting results by which to continue the ministries which have taken place on that square since 1722. The Cathedral of St. John was listed on the 2007 and 2008 Most Endangered Properties Lists.
