COMMISSION ON MINISTRY

Offering 2008-2009 Discernment Program

Are you hearing a call to ministry?

Once again, the Commission on Ministry is happy to come to you with our Discernment Program for the coming year. This is a wonderful opportunity for adult members of the Body of Christ in Rhode Island to reflect and grow in their faith. It is also the first step in the process leading to ordination for the diaconate and the priesthood.

The program is very similar to the one offered last year. As a result of feedback we received from last year's participants, we are including a presentation on lay ministry, in addition to the presentations on the diaconate and priesthood.

The first session is an Introductory Dinner that is being held at the Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Avenue, East  Providence, on Thursday, November 13th at 6:00 PM. All clergy have information on the program, so please speak with your parish clergy if you are interested.

Course: Human Nature and Christian Tradition: Is There a Problem?
Instructor: Flora A. Keshgegian

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 -  Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 7:00pm-9:00pm

Brown University, Continuing Studies

What does it mean to be human? Are human beings fundamentally good or evil? Why do people suffer? Do they have free will? Is death inevitable? What is the role and purpose of human sexuality? From its earliest centuries, Christianity has turned to the biblical story of creation and fall, as contained in the book of Genesis, to answer such questions. Christian interpretations of the Genesis narrative have shaped beliefs and practices about sexuality and marriage, suffering and death, freedom and necessity for centuries. This course will explore the Genesis story in the context of such interpretations in order to open up questions about freedom, sexuality, suffering and human nature.

Fee: $150.00

New Dollars / New Partners
for Your Sacred Place
Congregations still needed for New Dollars/New Partners training program

New Dollars/New Partners for Your Sacred Place, presented by Partners for Sacred Places, helps congregations build leadership, research and write a realistic and compelling case statement for funders, understand proven methods for reaching out to a wider community and learn how to fund-raise effectively. The training consists of four interactive training sessions over a nine month period.  In the sessions, participants from 8-15 congregations will learn with other congregations then return home to do their own planning with fellow congregants.

The La Farge Restoration Fund at Newport Congregation Church is seeking Rhode Island congregations of all faiths that have historic buildings 50 or more years old.  As the lead Sponsor, the La Farge Fund is working to raise a substantial portion of the funds to pay for the training.  At this time the La Farge Fund has raised half of the funds required to bring New Dollars/New Partners to Rhode Island.  At this time each congregation will be asked to contribute between $1000-$1500 to help fund the training program.  The contribution amount will go down as more congregations participate.  The contribution amount for each congregation will depend on additional funds raised by the La Farge Fund, the number of congregations participating, and each congregation's ability to pay.

If your congregation is interested in participating please download and complete the Request for Participation Form at the Preserve Rhode Island website.  Please return forms by November 1st.  The more congregations that participate, the lower each congregations contribution will be. Please do not hesitate to submit the Request for Participation Form if you are concerned about your congregation's ability to pay.  The La Farge Fund will work with your congregation on its contribution.  The success of this training program depends on the participation of 8 to 15 congregations who will share challenges, successes, and experiences to develop solutions for your sacred places.

The Fund hopes to offer New Dollars/New Partners starting in winter 2009. For more information about this training program, send a message to Karen LaFrance, Consultant to La Farge Restoration Fund, at klaf@cox.net. Voice mail messages may be left for Karen LaFrance at 602-788-9646 (toll call) who will return calls as soon as possible. Or contact Susanna Prull at Preserve Rhode Island at 401-272-5101 or sprull@preserveri.org
