ECW ANNUAL MEETING
The Episcopal Church Women will hold their Annual Meeting at Holy Trinity Church (1956 Main Road) in Tiverton, RI, on

Saturday, November 8
beginning at 10 AM.

All women in the Diocese and guests are invited to come to take part in this special time together.  The business meeting and election of officers will be followed by the Eucharist and lunch.

We will have a  presentation from Sister Grace of the Sisters of St. Margaret of Boston, MA.
Sr. Grace, SSM, was born and raised in central Massachusetts, and had a fifteen year career in mortgage banking prior to becoming a Sister of St. Margaret.  She entered as a postulant in October of 1999, was clothed as a novice on Palm Sunday, 2000, made her first vows in January, 2003, and her life vows in January, 2005.  While she was still a novice, she was sent to Neale House, a Mission House of the Society of St. Margaret in Manhattan, just after the devastating attacks of September 11, 2001.  She spent six months as the Spiritual Coordinator of St. Paul's Chapel, a parish of Trinity Church, Wall Street, which remained open twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, to serve as a respite center for the rescue workers who were working at Ground Zero.  These included police officers, firefighters, military personnel, chaplains, construction workers, government officials, and even some celebrities!  This experience shaped Sr. Grace's faith and vocation in many ways and that is what she will be speaking about at the meeting of the ECW.  She will also talk about the work and ministry of the Sisters of St. Margaret.

Once again, the Commission on Ministry is happy to come to you with our Discernment Program for the coming year. This is a wonderful opportunity for adult members of the Body of Christ in Rhode Island to reflect and grow in their faith. It is also the first step in the process leading to ordination for the diaconate and the priesthood.

The program is very similar to the one offered last year. As a result of feedback we received from last year's participants, we are including a presentation on lay ministry, in addition to the presentations on the diaconate and priesthood.

The first session is an Introductory Dinner that is being held at the Church of the Epiphany, 1336 Pawtucket Avenue, East  Providence, on Thursday, November 13th at 6:00 PM. All clergy have information on the program, so please speak with your parish clergy if you are interested.

Course: Human Nature and Christian Tradition: Is There a Problem?
Instructor: Flora A. Keshgegian

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 -  Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 7:00pm-9:00pm

Brown University, Continuing Studies

What does it mean to be human? Are human beings fundamentally good or evil? Why do people suffer? Do they have free will? Is death inevitable? What is the role and purpose of human sexuality? From its earliest centuries, Christianity has turned to the biblical story of creation and fall, as contained in the book of Genesis, to answer such questions. Christian interpretations of the Genesis narrative have shaped beliefs and practices about sexuality and marriage, suffering and death, freedom and necessity for centuries. This course will explore the Genesis story in the context of such interpretations in order to open up questions about freedom, sexuality, suffering and human nature.

Fee: $150.00

To register, go to http://brown.edu/scs/adult/continuingstudies

2008 EPISCOPAL CHARITIES UPDATE
2008 EPISCOPAL CHARITIES UPDATE
Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers who are working hard to encourage people in their parishes to participate in the important and wonderful work of Episcopal Charities.  Congratulations to our donors for their support and commitment to helping so many of our fellow Rhode Islanders who are in fragile situations and living on the edge.  We are all feeling the pinch in our economy and the problems it has brought, but none more than the most marginalized across our state.

The Campaign Update:
As of September 3, 2008, pledges total $428,948 - 86% of our $500,000 goal.

Have you made your contribution to Episcopal Charities this year?  Our goal is to contact every household in every parish.

If you have not participated yet, just think of all the good your gift will do for so many.  Please join with others across our diocese to help Christ in healing the gaps, hurts, and brokenness in thousands of lives. YOU can be a BRIDGE between their aspirations and accomplishments!
Here's how you can help:
·    PRAY DAILY.
Pray daily for our sisters and brothers in their situations of adversity, misfortune, poverty, despair, or loss. Ask Jesus to lead your heart to a faithful, joyful, responsive and generous response.
·    GIVE GENEROUSLY.
Send your gift or pledge today through your parish representative or online at http://www.episcopalri.org/charities/  (web-site soon to be updated.)  You can give to honor someone who is special to you, someone who has done something nice for you, as a memorial remembrance, and anniversary or birthday.
·    ENCOURAGE FELLOW PARISHIONERS TO PARTICIPATE.
If you have not supported Episcopal Charities before, consider being a NEW PLEDGER by joining with over 6,000 households across Rhode Island.
·    BE JOYFUL AND THANKFUL!
Praise God for the healing work and ministries of Charities, for His blessings, miracles, and love that shine through our hands, our gifts, and our work together.

Any questions?  Contact the Episcopal Charities Office at 275 North Main Street, Providence, RI  02903, 274-4500, ext. 234 for Peggy and 233 for Jack.

YOUR EPISCOPAL CHARITIES DOLLARS AT WORK

Sojourner House serves elderly people who are victims of domestic abuse (physical, emotional, psychological, and financial) through its Elder Safety and Abuse Prevention Program (ESAPP).  Sojourner House pioneered domestic violence services for elders in our state starting in 1999.

Elder abuse and neglect are serious problems in our nation, and in our state.  They cause deep fear and suffering in people who are among the most vulnerable of all to abuse and neglect.  Where illness or loss of mobility contribute to loss of independence, and individual's options for safety can be severely limited.

Sojourner House provides ESAPP clients with individualized abuse prevention case management services that are coordinated with the Department of Elderly Affairs (DEA) and other elder care management specialists.  They provide emotional support, referrals, and transportation to and from court (when clients are obtaining restraining orders) or medical evaluation appointments.  Frequently their advocate helps connect or reconnect the clients with their positive natural support systems (communities of faith, non-abusive relatives, friends, etc,) which secures safety for the elder.  Other times, law enforcement is a necessary part of the care plan.

Sojourner House's ESAPP has the following goals for empowering elderly participants:
1.  Improving or maintaining optimal function of the individual.
2.  Enhancing and strengthening positive family and community supports.
3.  Providing ease of access to needed services (they go to them).
4.  Encouraging active participation of the elder in planning for care and services.
Domestic violence is caused by flaws in the very foundation of our culture.  People's inability to create loving, sustaining, nurturing, power-balanced relationships is symptomatic of these flaws.  Oppression, domination, and manipulation is all too central to our culture, business and relationships.  The most vulnerable individuals pay the highest costs.

For more information contact: Ms. Karen D. Allen, Executive Director, 386 Smith Street, Providence, RI  02908.

New Dollars / New Partners
for Your Sacred Place
Congregations still needed for New Dollars/New Partners training program

New Dollars/New Partners for Your Sacred Place, presented by Partners for Sacred Places, helps congregations build leadership, research and write a realistic and compelling case statement for funders, understand proven methods for reaching out to a wider community and learn how to fund-raise effectively. The training consists of four interactive training sessions over a nine month period.  In the sessions, participants from 8-15 congregations will learn with other congregations then return home to do their own planning with fellow congregants.

The La Farge Restoration Fund at Newport Congregation Church is seeking Rhode Island congregations of all faiths that have historic buildings 50 or more years old.  As the lead Sponsor, the La Farge Fund is working to raise a substantial portion of the funds to pay for the training.  At this time the La Farge Fund has raised half of the funds required to bring New Dollars/New Partners to Rhode Island.  At this time each congregation will be asked to contribute between $1000-$1500 to help fund the training program.  The contribution amount will go down as more congregations participate.  The contribution amount for each congregation will depend on additional funds raised by the La Farge Fund, the number of congregations participating, and each congregation's ability to pay.

If your congregation is interested in participating please download and complete the Request for Participation Form at the Preserve Rhode Island website.  Please return forms by November 1st.  The more congregations that participate, the lower each congregations contribution will be. Please do not hesitate to submit the Request for Participation Form if you are concerned about your congregation's ability to pay.  The La Farge Fund will work with your congregation on its contribution.  The success of this training program depends on the participation of 8 to 15 congregations who will share challenges, successes, and experiences to develop solutions for your sacred places.

The Fund hopes to offer New Dollars/New Partners starting in winter 2009. For more information about this training program, send a message to Karen LaFrance, Consultant to La Farge Restoration Fund, at klaf@cox.net. Voice mail messages may be left for Karen LaFrance at 602-788-9646 (toll call) who will return calls as soon as possible. Or contact Susanna Prull at Preserve Rhode Island at 401-272-5101 or sprull@preserveri.org

Faith Walk for Charity
Faith Walk for Charity 2008-Fact Sheet
(www.faithwalkforcharity.org)

What do Jews, Muslims, and all manner of Christians have in common?  They all think it's a good idea to help people in need.

Faith Walk for Charity exists in order to accentuate this common value.  Every year, Faith Walk for Charity draws together Rhode Islanders from a wide diversity of religious traditions to do something good together-to help a select group of neighbors in need.

An advisory board consisting of leading clergy and lay people from a wide variety of faith groups meets once annually to select a charitable cause and beneficiary to support.

Started in 2006, Faith Walk for Charity has drawn together in each of the last two years nearly 200 Rhode Islanders from a wide variety of religious traditions to walk one mile together-led by clergy from the Jewish, Catholic, Muslim, Baptist, and Episcopal faiths.

Over $50,000 has been raised so far.  In 2006, the cause was homelessness in RI, and all moneys donated went to Crossroads-RI.  In 2007, the cause was the hungry in Rhode Island; all donations were given to the RI Community Food Bank.

This year the cause is children victims of domestic violence.  All donations will be given to the Rhode Island Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and will be earmarked for programs and services-like temporary shelter, counseling, and therapy-to support children who have been victims or witnesses of domestic violence.  To learn more about the RI Coalition Against Domestic Violence, please visit www.ricadv.org

This year's walk will be on Sunday, October 5 at 2:00 pm, in Colt State Park, in Bristol.

Everyone is warmly invited to attend.

A financial gift is requested, but not required.

To learn more, and to access forms online, please go to the Faith Walk for Charity website: www.faithwalkforcharity.org
