Course: Human Nature and Christian Tradition: Is There a Problem?
Instructor: Flora A. Keshgegian

Wednesday, October 22, 2008 -  Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 7:00pm-9:00pm

Brown University, Continuing Studies

What does it mean to be human? Are human beings fundamentally good or evil? Why do people suffer? Do they have free will? Is death inevitable? What is the role and purpose of human sexuality? From its earliest centuries, Christianity has turned to the biblical story of creation and fall, as contained in the book of Genesis, to answer such questions. Christian interpretations of the Genesis narrative have shaped beliefs and practices about sexuality and marriage, suffering and death, freedom and necessity for centuries. This course will explore the Genesis story in the context of such interpretations in order to open up questions about freedom, sexuality, suffering and human nature.

Fee: $150.00

Environmental Stewardship Task Force
A Report from the Diocesan Environmental Stewardship Task Force

An ad-hoc task force was formed in response to a resolution, passed by unanimous voice vote at our 217th diocesan convention, calling for increased awareness and action in addressing the climate crisis caused by the increase in greenhouse gases.

The Environmental Stewardship Task Force has been meeting regularly since early 2008 in an effort to identify what we as the church can practically "do" and be true to the following statement.

"As people of God, we are called to care for God's gift of creation.  People of faith are called to be moral images of God and to reflect God's divine love and justice through "keeping" the Garden (Gen. 2:15).  We can strive to reduce the impacts of our energy consumption in order to fulfill the ministry to be better stewards of God's creation."

The resolution as passed by convention recommends energy audits for occupied buildings as well as corporate and personal efforts to educate and advocate for the changes that must be made.  The task force has begun a survey of all parishes, missions and institutions of the diocese.  The survey's intention is to discover what has already been done and what plans may be in place for the future.  While we will continue to survey, this initial survey is intended to get a "feel" for where we are now.  It has become clear early on that there is a lot of work to be done.  It is also clear we may not have the initial survey completed before our 218th convention.

As of this writing we have completed 35 surveys.  Virtually all surveys were conducted over the phone and we are keeping a detailed spreadsheet of the survey answers.  We have no intention to publish the details of the survey but to use it as a guide to help focus our efforts.

Of the congregations surveyed a third have someone or a group dedicated to "greening" the parish.  Half have had energy audits conducted on their buildings.  Recycling of paper, plastic and glass has been identified as a problem in that cities and towns do not pick up from churches or businesses.  In virtually all parishes people take recyclables home to be recycled.  There is awareness that switching to florescent lights will save energy and most have, but there is a cost to switch.  It is safe to say that all those contacted are aware and concerned about the environment and support conservation.  Some of the ways parishes are conserving energy include:  Scheduling weekly parish group meetings on one night to save heating costs; carpooling, insulating hot water heaters; installing water saver devices, installing programmable thermostats, insulating doors and windows, and replacing inefficient appliances as they wear out.
Other ways congregations are helping the environment are the use of recycled paper products, the disuse of Styrofoam cups, plastic water bottles and not using pesticides or herbicides.  Many are using reusable canvas shopping bags.  A few are hosting educational programs and discussion groups.

It is clear our congregations are working to become better stewards of the environment.  The Environmental Stewardship Task Force will continue the survey process in order to strengthen lines of communication to and among the congregations.  We have space under development on the diocesan web site and will continue to identify contact people in each congregation who we can communicate with directly.  All people and ideas are welcome.   Please contact Zeke Olsen, 783-4321, or Katherine Gibson, 364-6469, if you are interested in joining our efforts.

Respectfully,

(E.S.T.F.) The Environmental Stewardship Task Force
