Greetings!
Good afternoon!
We are saying farewell to summer (it was a very pleasant summer) and hello the seasonal build-up of programs and other excitement that comes with Autumn in the Episcopal Church. Quiet church summers may not be unique to Rhode Island but I have certainly not encountered them in my travels elsewhere. My clergy friends from out of state think it is strange that many services dip down to one and even many choirs rest their vocal chords. This is just the way things are done! The new season always seems filled with potential for growth and outreach as people return to the pews and shed their vacaction schedules.
I would love to see all churches with a giant "Welcome Home" banner in their front lawn. A layered meaning but seasonally appropriate? Hmm?
Speaking of growth and outreach, how about a challenge for the kickoff season? Stretch. Volunteer. Encourage others to do the same. Want a program at your church? Then help get it started. Want new faces? Bring them. Recognize a challenge and find a Christian solution!
RISEN Magazine's annual Convention Issue will be out a few weeks prior to our Convention.
Be sure to see the big ad for the Pumpkin Junction at St. John's at the end of eRISEN.
Peace,

Course: Human Nature and Christian Tradition: Is There a Problem? Instructor: Flora A. Keshgegian
Wednesday, October 22, 2008 - Wednesday, November 12, 2008, 7:00pm-9:00pm
Brown University, Continuing Studies
What does it mean to be human? Are human beings fundamentally good or evil? Why do people suffer? Do they have free will? Is death inevitable? What is the role and purpose of human sexuality? From its earliest centuries, Christianity has turned to the biblical story of creation and fall, as contained in the book of Genesis, to answer such questions. Christian interpretations of the Genesis narrative have shaped beliefs and practices about sexuality and marriage, suffering and death, freedom and necessity for centuries. This course will explore the Genesis story in the context of such interpretations in order to open up questions about freedom, sexuality, suffering and human nature.
Fee: $150.00

GLOBAL AIDS INTERFAITH ALLIANCE
|
|
The Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (www.thegaia.org) partners with religious organizations in resource-poor countries for community based HIV prevention and care. Its current emphasis is on the sub-Saharan country of Malawi, one of the poorest and most infected areas in the world. I recently joined the GAIA staff to help with congregational relationships on the East Coast to raise funds for this work and to implement the UN Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) with sustainable projects.
In a recent trip to Malawi I had an incredible experience witnessing the level of poverty and illness and observing the good work that GAIA is doing. GAIA has a wonderful Malawian staff that coordinates efforts in many of the rural villages. GAIA will soon move into the most southern region of the country which is far removed from medical care, transportation, and other support services. Nutrition and clean water, as well as health care, are major issues.
I am available to preach and/or present a power-point presentation about this work. If your congregation is supporting the UN MDGs and the alleviation of HIV/AIDS, or is interested in doing so, I invite you to contact me for a time when we can discuss this important issue. -- The Rev. Dr. David A. We thank all our dedicated volunteers for all the work they have done in their parishes to raise awareness of the many critical needs in food, shelter, crisis, counseling, children, the poor, and elderly and health that cross our state -- and for their efforts to help raise funds to meet those needs and provide 'bridges of hope' to thousands. Congratulations to our donors for their support and commitment to helping so many of our neighbors who live is such fragile situations.
The Campaign Update: As of September 3, 2008, pledges total $407,493 - 81% of our $500,000 goal. Individual contact challenge is at 60%. Our goal is to contact every household in every parish.
Have you made your contribution to Episcopal Charities this year?
If you have not participated yet, just think of all the good your gift will do for so many. Please join with others across our diocese to help Christ in healing the gaps, hurts, and brokenness in thousands of lives. YOU can be a BRIDGE between their aspirations and accomplishments! Here's how you can help: · PRAY DAILY. Pray daily for our sisters and brothers in their situations of adversity, misfortune, poverty, despair, or loss. Ask Jesus to lead your heart to a faithful, joyful, responsive and generous response. · GIVE GENEROUSLY. Send your gift or pledge today through your parish representative or online at http://www.episcopalri.org/charities/ (web-site soon to be updated.) You can give to honor someone who is special to you, someone who has done something nice for you, as a memorial remembrance, and anniversary or birthday. · ENCOURAGE FELLOW PARISHIONERS TO PARTICIPATE. If you have not supported Episcopal Charities before, consider being a NEW PLEDGER by joining with over 6,000 households across Rhode Island. · BE JOYFUL AND THANKFUL! YOUR EPISCOPAL CHARITIES DOLLARS AT WORK
Since 1973, the non-profit Interfaith Counseling Center (ICC) has served thousands of individuals through their offices in Providence and satellites in other parts of the state. Their clinical focus is psychological care, using a faith-sensitive perspective, for clients facing life crises and difficult transitions. In addition to individual and couples counseling, they provide specialized training and consultation to clergy and faith communities, including a variety of ongoing workshops. Last year, ICC became a fully accredited member of the Denver-based Samaritan Institute one of the largest providers of faith-sensitive outpatient counseling in the United States, with over 100 carefully selected and credentialed centers.
In Rhode Island, the homeless situation is an area of concern they continue to address. They are currently working with Access Rhode Island designed to serve people experiencing chronic homelessness who also have a diagnosis of mental illness and/or substance abuse. They are also working with Amos House and Youth in Action to identify those individuals in need of services who are unable to pay for them. They plan on providing mental health services to those individuals as well as other underserved persons through the funds provided by Episcopal Charities.
The ICC provides short term counseling of up to ten sessions for fifteen low-income individuals, who either lack health insurance entirely or whose health insurance does not cover therapy. Clients receive counseling for issues such as family strife, relationships, despair and hopelessness, depression, anxiety, trauma, bereavement, job loss, and crises. Individuals are referred through an established clergy network which consists of the R.I. State Counsel of Churches and the R.I. Interfaith Coalition as well as local agencies.
For more information, please contact: The Rev. Dr. Donald Anderson, 225 Chapman Street, Suite 303, Providence, RI, 02905.
