Choir Camp
for young singers grades 4-12
at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center, Greenfield, N.H.
August 3-9, 2008
Our 16th summer!
In one short week of Choir Camp, strangers become friends and start to sing a shared song. Music and friendship bring young singers back year after year-over half of Choir Campers come back the next year.
We travel the world in a single week!
Choir Camp brings young singers in contact with music from around the globe and across the centuries, featuring Anglican chant, canticles and anthems from many traditions. Each day begins with Morning Prayer, while the week wraps up with a Festival Lessons and Carols service on Saturday morning. Young singers from parishes with large or small music programs are welcome. Scholarship funds are available.
Choir Camp is led by a volunteer staff of trained music professionals. While at camp, singers are also under the guidance of a well-trained camp staff focused on the needs of campers.
Choir Camp is a specialty camp program held at the Barbara C. Harris Camp and Conference Center, set among towering pines on beautiful Otter Lake in the scenic Monadnock region of southwest New Hampshire. Accredited by the American Camp Association, the facility is owned and operated by the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts and offers an active, fun and challenging program in a healthy and safe camp environment.
Every day:
Make church music come alive and learn about church music traditions.
Sing with friends.
Learn chant, canticles and anthems, ancient and new.
Have summer camp fun: swimming, arts and crafts, campfires, and more.
"It's like cramming a lifetime into a week," says a Choir Camper.

2008 Episcopal Charities Annual Campaign Update
Many thanks to our dedicated volunteers who are working hard to encourage people in their parishes to participate in the important and wonderful work of Episcopal Charities. Congratulations to our donors for their support and commitment to helping so many of our fellow Rhode Islanders who are in fragile situations and living on the edge. We are all feeling the pinch in our economy and the problems it has brought, but none more than the most marginalized across our state.
Here's the Campaign update. As of July 14, we have $384,275 in pledges - 77% of our $500,000 goal. Individual contact challenge is at 59%. Our goal is to contact every household in every parish.
The mission of Episcopal Charities began with a desire and sense of responsibility to help those in need. This tradition continues today. Funds from Episcopal Charities assist battered women and abused children seeking a safe haven, with the education and counseling that will help them achieve a better life. Thousands will have food, hear, shelter, healthcare and other basic needs. With Episcopal Charities funds the elderly and terminally ill receive comfort and a sense of dignity through their last days. Those who suffer from drug addiction receive help toward recovery. Immigrants will be able to read and speak English. Children find fellowship and learn team-building skills at summer camps. This year, social service grants are being distributed to 105 agencies and programs throughout Rhode Island.
Have you made your contribution to Episcopal Charities this year?
If you have not participated yet, just think of all the good your gift will do for so many. Please join with others across our diocese to help Christ in healing the gaps, hurts, and brokenness in thousands of lives. YOU can be a BRIDGE between their aspirations and accomplishments!
Here's how you can help: · PRAY DAILY. Pray daily for our sisters and brothers in their situations of adversity, misfortune, poverty, despair, or loss. Ask Jesus to lead your heart to a faithful, joyful, responsive and generous response. · GIVE GENEROUSLY. Send your gift or pledge today through your parish representative or online at http://www.episcopalri.org/charities/ (web-site soon to be updated.) You can give to honor someone who is special to you, someone who has done something nice for you, as a memorial remembrance, and anniversary or birthday. · ENCOURAGE FELLOW PARISHIONERS TO PARTICIPATE. If you have not supported Episcopal Charities before, consider being a NEW PLEDGER by joining with over 6,000 households across Rhode Island. · BE JOYFUL AND THANKFUL! Praise God for the healing work and ministries of Charities, for His blessings, miracles, and love that shine through our hands, our gifts, and our work together.
Any questions? Contact the Episcopal Charities Office at 275 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02903, 274-4500, ext. 234 for Peggy and 233 for Jack.
YOUR EPISCOPAL CHARITIES DOLLARS AT WORK
Family Action Community Resources through its Woonsocket Shelter for the Homeless has a goal to help individuals and families move from the shelter into decent, affordable, stable housing at the earliest opportunity. Adult shelter residents work with their staff to develop a plan of action to obtain income, health care and housing. While most enter the shelter feeling they have hit the bottom, with help they regain their self-esteem, increase their family management skills and prepare for a new life. An after school program for children in the shelter supports them academically and allows them to relax with their peers.
Most of those served by the Woonsocket Shelter are very low income, on public assistance or working at low wage jobs and have less than a high school education. They may be coming from a family break-up or seeking temporary shelter because of a domestic violence situation. An unexpected medical issue, a lay-off or a natural disaster, such as a fire, can create a need for shelter. Families with children on the Family Independence Program (welfare) do not receive enough cash assistance to pay for an apartment in a private setting, and as a result many are evicted for non-payment. The amount of cash public assistance for families with children has not been increased in 18 years, even though the housing has become more and more expensive.
This project serves two segments of the homeless population: single women and families with children. Approximately 80% of beneficiaries will be families and most will be headed by a single (female) parent. About 50% will be members of ethnic minority groups. Many will have disabilities related to mental illness or other medical conditions. In age they will range quite literally from birth to elderly and come from a variety of educational and economic backgrounds. Many will come from broken homes, dysfunctional families, or domestic violence situations. All have a common denominator: they are homeless and need a place to stay.
New shelter residents receive the following standard services: assessment, provision of emergency supplies and hygiene products, food, bed linens, blankets, baby items if needed, etc. Other non-emergency but important issues are addressed as soon as possible with the highest priority assigned to registering children in school. Residents are assigned a case manager within 72 hours whom they work with to identify issues that contributed to the household's homelessness and to develop an action plan addressing the specific needs of the family and its members.
Referrals are made to other FRCA programs and other agencies to obtain needed services, including food, income, health care, employment training, etc. All residents participate in a Life Skills Program of workshops on financial literacy, parenting, interpersonal skills and employment. Families are assisted to transition from the shelter to permanent housing. This service may involve assistance with appeals for subsidized housing, training on housing search, providing assistance with security deposit and/or helping to set up a new household - providing the basic supplies and equipment for the family to function without setting them back financially. The costs of moving to permanent housing with the basics of furniture, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, beds and bedding, etc. would be prohibitive without help.
For more information, please contact Ben Lessing, Executive Director, 245 Main Street, Woonsocket, RI 02895, 766-0900.
