EASTER 2008 MESSAGE
|
|
The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori Presiding Bishop The Episcopal Church
Your Easter celebration undoubtedly has included lots of physical signs of new life - eggs, flowers, new green growth. As the Easter season continues, consider how your daily living can be an act of greater life for other creatures. How can you enact the new life we know in Jesus the Christ? In other words, how can you be the sacrament, the outward and visible sign, of the grace that you know in the resurrected Christ? How can your living let others live more abundantly?
The Judaeo-Christian tradition has been famously blamed for much of the current environmental crisis, particularly for our misreading of Genesis 1:28 as a charge to "fill the earth and subdue it." Our forebears were so eager to distinguish their faith from the surrounding Canaanite religion and its concern for fertility that some of them worked overtime to separate us from an awareness of "the hand of God in the world about us," especially in a reverence for creation. How can we love God if we do not love what God has made?
We base much of our approach to loving God and our neighbors in this world on our baptismal covenant. Yet our latest prayer book was written just a bit too early to include caring for creation among those explicit baptismal promises. I would invite you to explore those promises a bit more deeply - where and how do they imply caring for the rest of creation?
We are beginning to be aware of the ways in which our lack of concern for the rest of creation results in death and destruction for our neighbors. We cannot love our neighbors unless we care for the creation that supports all our earthly lives. We are not respecting the dignity of our fellow creatures if our sewage or garbage fouls their living space. When atmospheric warming, due in part to the methane output of the millions of cows we raise each year to produce hamburger, begins to slowly drown the island homes of our neighbors in the South Pacific, are we truly sharing good news?
The food we eat, the energy we use, the goods and foods we buy, the ways in which we travel, are all opportunities - choices and decisions - to be for others, both human and other. Our Christian commitment is for this - that we might live that more abundant life, and that we might do it in a way that is for the whole world.
Abundant blessings this Easter, and may those blessings abound through the coming days and years.

HOLY LAND - MOVING FORWARD
| |
The carrying out of the Resolution on the Holy Land approved at Diocesan Convention in 2006 will henceforth take place under the aegis of Social Justice Ministries chaired by Deacon Dorothy (Ricky) Brightman. We will continue to sponsor and to distribute information about talks and pertinent events in the area (see announcement below) but also will begin engaging in concrete projects to provide humanitarian aid and market outlets for the people suffering most acutely from the effects of occupation and unrest. Among the projects that we have in mind are: pilgrimages to the Holy Land that combine tours of the religious sites with exposure to life on the ground and to Israelis and Palestinians working together for peace; sale of olive oil and olive wood carvings to provide markets for artisans whose normal outlets have been disrupted by border closings and checkpoints; grants for educational and medical aid; and political work to urge the US Government to play a more even-handed role in bringing both sides to the negotiating table in the framework of international law.
We need help to move forward. If you would like to explore participation in any aspect of these projects, please contact Deacon Ricky Brightman at 401 781 9210 before 9 a.m. or after 7 p.m.
Don't forget that the Resource Center in the Diocesan Annex has an entire collection of carefully selected audio-visual and printed materials on the conflict in Israel-Palestine with an annotated bibliography to help orient users. Please consult them.
What: Acknowledging the Past, Imagining the Future A talk by two human rights activists, one Israeli, one Palestinian, that explores the experiences of both peoples since 1948 and what is required to achieve a just solution to the conflict. RUN THE RESERVOIR |
|
Dear friend of the Trinity Food Closet
As Director of the first time event "Run the Reservoir 15K and Relay Walk", I am asking for your help to raise awareness and vital resources for the food closet maintained by Trinity Episcopal Church since 1999.
Since inception, the Food Closet has seen an increase in need every year measured by increases in the number served monthly from an initial five families to the current forty plus families. In some ways, the RI rural needy are more needy than their city counterpart because of their lack of a "network" of agencies directing them to find help. There are several levels of corporate support suggested to help the Food Closet fulfill its' mission through this event:
Main Course Sponsor * $2500 Name / Logo on the front of T-shirts given to (the first 300) participants Corporate logo on banner at start / finish line Corporate banner displayed at post race celebration Opportunity to include marketing item in runners packets
Side Dish Sponsor * $1000 Name / Logo on back of participants T-shirts Corporate banner displayed Corporate logo on course markers Opportunity to include marketing item in runners packets
Salad Sponsor * $250 Name / Logo on back of participants T-shirts Name / Logo on event Sponsor Board Opportunity to include a marketing item in runners packets
Appetizer Sponsor * $100 Name /Logo on back of participants T-shirts Name / Logo on event Sponsor Board
Thank you for your consideration. We hope that you will join us in this fight to end hunger in rural Rhode Island.
Sincerely, Milt Schumacher 401-647-3905
