Keep the Music Alive! is an awareness building and fund raising weekend for the benefit of the musicians in post-Katrina New Orleans. Funds will be sent to St. Anna's Church (Episcopal) for its Ministry to Musicians.

The Commission on Ministry would like to invite all baptized persons to come an introductory dinner for the 2007-2008 Discernment Program. The program is designed to help identify and explore the gifts given to each person in their ministry in the Church. The program is for lay ministry as well as a requirement for those discerning a call to ordained ministry; beginning with the introductory dinner and meeting on a monthly basis through September 2008. (The months of June, July and August will be a time of self study and exploration with no formal meetings.) | |

The Commission on Ministry is seeking individuals both Lay and Ordained to become trained Discernment Team members for the upcoming Discernment Program Year. Individual participants in the training course will make a commitment of one year to be available in taking part in assisting Program individuals in the understanding and recognition of their spiritual journey. The Listening Hearts training course will be held on the evening of Friday, October 19th and the morning of Saturday, October 20th with a follow-up program on Saturday, November 17th. Trainers have worked with Suzanne Farnham in the Listening Hearts Model of Spiritual Discernment. 2007 ECW Retreat about Celtic Spirit and Christian Community will be held at ECC on October 11- 13.The leader of this workshop is The Rev. Dr. john Gregory Prior, who has been the rector of St. Andrew's-by- the-Sea in Little Compton since 2002.
Celtic Spirit and Christian Community is designed as a lived introduction to Christian spirituality in the Celtic tradition. It explores insights from the Celtic tradition about how we live our lives in community and in relation to the world around us.
The retreat schedule includes introductory lectures on the Celtic spiritual tradition, quiet time for reading and prayer, long walks and conversation and an opportunity to explore ways to apply the insights to issues of how we live our lives as Christians in community.

"Christianity & Islam: Is a Clash Inevitable?"

Additional info: A presentation by Lord George Carey of Clifton, the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury. During his tenure as Archbishop, Lord Carey helped initiate an on-going dialogue between Christian and Muslim scholars. He hosted the innaugural gathering at LambethPalace in January of 2002. Lord Carey continues to be actively involved in this area, serving as co-chair of the Council of 100, an initiative of the World Economic Forum, which seeks to promote dialogue and cooperation between the Western and Islamic Worlds. In this presentation at St. Matthew's Lord Carey will offer his thoughts about the challenging and dynamic relationship between Christianity and Islam.

"Frightfully Spooktacular" Organ Recital

The Church Pension Group is sponsoring its third annual Episcopal Business Administration Conference (EBAC) for Parishes and Institutions on October 18-19 in New York City and November 1-2 in Orlando. The conference is a short course in "Everything you ever wanted to know about the Church Pension Group." MUSIC THAT MAKES COMMUNITY
Join the All Saints Company at St. Paul's Chapel in New York City for a three-day workshop on teaching and performing songs by ear. Designed for clergy and music directors, participants will study and practice techniques for introducing accessible and original music without accompaniment or printed materials. With a special focus on smaller liturgies, this is a great opportunity for those leading alternative services, or working in missions and smaller parishes.
Programs will be facilitated by Ben Allaway, Marilyn Haskel, Eric Law, and Donald Schell, who will work with both small groups and the conference as a whole to develop participants' skills and speak to the role of music ministry in smaller congregations.
Music that Makes Community will be held October 4 to 6, with programs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. SECOND ANNUAL FAITH WALK FOR CHARITY

Faith Walk for Charity's second annual walk will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00pm (registration begins at 1:00 pm) at ColtState Park in Bristol.
Many RI Episcopal churches played an important role in making last year's inaugural event. Indeed, the diocese has played an important role in fostering this worthy cause; Bishop Wolf is one of a six-member board of advisors made of senior leaders of a variety of RI religious organizations. The FWC advisory board annually selects a secular, human need, and a chosen beneficiary to be served by the annual walk and associated fund-raising activity.
Last fall, FWC drew together some 200 Rhode Islanders from a wide variety of religious traditions to participate in a brief, informal multi-faith religious service at the outdoor chapel of a RI state park. The service was led by Rabbi Sarah Mack, of TempleBeth-El, Bishop Geralyn Wolf, of the RI Episcopal Diocese, Father Barry Gamache, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, and Imam Farid Ansari, of the Muslim American Dawah Center of RI. A one-mile walk followed the service.
By comparison to other walkathons, FWC was a small event-short in duration and short on fanfare. But the impact was substantial. In spite of minimal time to advertise this new event, just over $27,000 was raised for the benefit of Rhode Island's homeless. (And unlike many walkathons, literally all donations went to the actual charitable cause, as opposed to administrative expenses.) The chosen beneficiary of FWC last year was Crossroads-RI, which provides emergency support, job training, and other services for the homeless. The head of development at Crossroads-RI said she was "amazed at the success". She went on to say "The outpouring of support is a clear sign that people like the idea of accentuating that which is common and good about various religions."
FWC was at least as substantial spiritually as it was financially. One religious leader in attendance called it "awesome." People from different faiths gave thanks to God and focused on their common desire to help neighbors in need. New friendships were made. In a year-end news article called "Looking Back at Good People in a Tough Year", the Providence Journal praised FWC among a handful of organizations that made a positive impact on the community.
The beneficiary of this year's FWC is The RI Community Foodbank. The RI Community Foodbank began 25 years ago by offering loaves of bread to those in need. Today it is a program vital to Rhode Island's hunger safety net, feeding over 40,000 hungry Rhode Islanders every month. One in three of these is a child. Beyond a gift to feed the hungry, a gift to FWC signifies support for the idea that we should accentuate that which is common-and commonly good-about different religions. Not that differences about various religions are unimportant, but simply that by focusing on the commonly held value of helping neighbors in need, we can do a lot of good together.
How can you get involved?
· Come on your own, with your family, or bring along some friends to the FWC walk on October 14, 2007, 2:00 pm, ColtState Park, Bristol. To register in advance and make a donation, please visit www.faithwalkforcharity.org.
· Organize a group form your parish. (Perhaps it could be the youth group or Sunday school class.) Collect a donation and give corporately. Bring a banner and walk together. (Again, group registration and donation form available at www.faithwalkforcharity.org.)
· Spread the word. The success of FWC is critically dependent on spreading the word throughout Rhode Island places of worship. The Summer Collegium, a project in support of small congregations, is now accepting applications for the Summer 2008 event, which will take place from June 25-July 3, 2008. This nine-day, all expenses paid conference for clergy and their spouses or partners is open to those who pastor small congregations (100 or fewer average Sunday attendance) and are committed to small church ministry. Singles and non-ordained pastors are welcome to apply for the one of the 25 openings. The conference consists of keynotes and workshops on all aspects of small church ministry, with a special emphasis on worship and preaching. Keynotes include Tony Pappas, who has written extensively on small church life, and Peter Bush and Christine O'Reilly, authors of the new book Where 20 or 30 are Gathered: Leading Worship in the SmallChurch. We're looking for a Episcopal Priest who would enjoy taking charge of this ministry of welcoming couples to be married at St. Peter's. The candidate must be able to work evenings and weekends while helping couples navigate the entire wedding process, from pre-marital counseling, through rehearsals, to the wedding ceremony itself. Fund for Theological Education Invites Congregations to Apply for Grants
The Fund for Theological Education is a national advocate for excellence and diversity in Christian ministry and theological scholarship. To help congregations identify and nurture the next generation of leaders for the church, the fund is offering competitive grants for grassroots programs that cultivate a sense of Christian vocation and the call to ministry among youth.
The grants are awarded through the fund's Calling Congregations initiative, a national ecumenical effort to encourage and equip churches to play a leading role in the vocational discernment of young men and women and to increase the number of gifted young people considering ordained ministry as a profession. The Lilly Endowment, Inc. funds the initiative.
Grants are made to congregations and are intended to support the "culture of call" within congregations. However, grants may include support for activities that foster partnerships between the congregation and campus ministries, theological schools, camps, denominational bodies, and other congregations in strengthening the congregation's capacity to nurture vocation and the call to ministry.
FTE will award $200,000 in total grants over three years, beginning in 2007. Grants will range from $5,000 to $12,000 each.

Wolcott Family Foundation Offers Support for Social Change and Environmental Stewardship
The Wolcott Family Foundation focuses its funding in the areas of social change and environmental stewardship, with emphasis on supporting grassroots organizations for which a small grant can make a real contribution.
Priority is given to organizations that empower individuals and communities to organize for social change; seek to strengthen civil liberties and civil rights issues; build community development that seeks to break the cycle of poverty, create economic opportunity, and build effective leadership in distressed communities; and demonstrate linkages and interdependence of ecosystems and economics with win-win solutions and collaborative approaches.
Consideration will be given to projects that emphasize environmental preservation, advocacy, and community involvement aimed at root causes of societal problems.
Eligible groups are tax-exempt 501(c)(3) organizations. Organizations based in Colorado are given preference. The foundation does not fund groups with annual budgets over $350,000. Requests will be considered for either general support or specific project support. Grants are for one year and will generally range from $1,000 to $7,500 each.
