Epiphany, Providence

Deacon student welcomed at Epiphany, Providence

We are pleased to welcome Joannie Collins who is interning with us at Epiphany, Providence. Joannie has been with us only a few weeks, but has already rolled up her sleeves and started working. She helped at the Epiphany Meal Site last Saturday and plans to attend our Meal Site Board meeting this month. Joanne has also contacted with an organization called Project Home in Philadelphia, which has been very successful in finding ways to assist the homeless in their area. Joannie hopes to begin working with this organization in order to obtain information that will help us address the needs of our own homeless here in Providence. Joannie is a member of St. James Church, North Providence, and works for Channel 10. She is in her third year of Deacon School.

Conflict in the Holy Land

Conflict in the Holy Land

Please join us for the continuing series of talks that began in June. Organized by a committee within the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, these presentations are a follow-up to the Resolution on the Holy Land.  Approved at our Annual Convention in October 2006, this called upon the Diocese to engage in a year of study of this conflict with a view to formulating policies for constructive involvement in the search for a just peace.  Conceived as a coherent whole, the series will be most meaningful if you can attend all talks; however, each presentation can stand on its own.

I. "Religious Self-Criticism and the Middle East: A Christian Reflects"

A Talk By: James Carroll - Author, Playwright, Columnist Boston Globe.

When: Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m.

Where:  St. Martin's Church, 50 Orchard Ave., Providence

Acclaimed author, playwright, and social and religious commentator James Carroll has an op-ed column in the Boston Globe that has run weekly since 1992. His book Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews  A History, published in 2001, was a New York Times bestseller and is the basis of a 2007 documentary film directed by Oren Jacoby.  A former Paulist priest, James Carroll is a regular participant in on-going Jewish-Christian-Muslim encounters. Suggested donation $10

II. "The Conflict in Israel-Palestine: From Mythology to History"

When:  Sunday, September 30, at 4:30 p.m.

Where:  Christ Church Parish House, 1643 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln (at the intersection of Routes 123/122)

Having grown up in a Jewish household and absorbed the enthusiasm and idealization that followed the establishment of the state of Israel, Marsha Pripstein Posusney's views changed as she studied Middle East History and became active in Third World causes. This talk combines rigorous history of the conflict with the story of her personal odyssey.

III. "American Credibility in the Middle East"

A Talk By: Lincoln Chafee, Former Senator and Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations

When:   Tuesday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Cathedral of St. John, 271 North Main St., Providence

Former Senator Lincoln Chafee needs no introduction in the state that he represented between 1999 and 2006. His position on the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations gave him a unique vantage point from which to observe the U.S. role in the conflict in Israel-Palestine on which this talk will focus.

II.

Audio-visual and printed materials in Resource Center
To supplement the series of talks on the conflict in Israel-Palestine, books, articles, pamphlets, and DVDs are available at the
Diocesan Resource Center for borrowing  by individuals and parishes.  Among the many materials currently available are two books, one by Jimmy Carter entitled  Palestine Peace Not Apartheid and the other by  Rabbi Michael Lerner called Healing Israel/Palestine.  There are also a video made for PBS by David Shipler entitled Arabs and Jews:Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land and the DVD produced by Anna Baltzer that we showed during our program on June 20, Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photographs.  Both video and DVD lend themselves to group screenings; and if you so desire, we can arrange for someone with knowledge of the conflict to assist in leading discussion.  The collection will be expanding. We ask that you return these materials as rapidly as possible so that they may be available to others.

SECOND ANNUAL FAITH WALK FOR CHARITY

Sunday, October 14, 2:00 pm, ColtState Park

For more information, please go to: www.faithwalkforcharity.org

Faith Walk for Charity's second annual walk will take place on Sunday, October 14 at 2:00pm (registration begins at 1:00 pm) at ColtState Park in Bristol.

Many RI Episcopal churches played an important role in making last year's inaugural event.  Indeed, the diocese has played an important role in fostering this worthy cause; Bishop Wolf is one of a six-member board of advisors made of senior leaders of a variety of RI religious organizations.  The FWC advisory board annually selects a secular, human need, and a chosen beneficiary to be served by the annual walk and associated fund-raising activity.

Last fall, FWC drew together some 200 Rhode Islanders from a wide variety of religious traditions to participate in a brief, informal multi-faith religious service at the outdoor chapel of a RI state park.  The service was led by Rabbi Sarah Mack, of

TempleBeth-El, Bishop Geralyn Wolf, of the RI Episcopal Diocese, Father Barry Gamache, of St. Mary's Roman Catholic Church, and Imam Farid Ansari, of the Muslim American Dawah Center of RI.  A one-mile walk followed the service.

By comparison to other walkathons, FWC was a small event-short in duration and short on fanfare.  But the impact was substantial.  In spite of minimal time to advertise this new event, just over $27,000 was raised for the benefit of

Rhode Island's homeless.  (And unlike many walkathons, literally all donations went to the actual charitable cause, as opposed to administrative expenses.)  The chosen beneficiary of FWC last year was Crossroads-RI, which provides emergency support, job training, and other services for the homeless.  The head of development at Crossroads-RI said she was "amazed at the success".  She went on to say "The outpouring of support is a clear sign that people like the idea of accentuating that which is common and good about various religions."

FWC was at least as substantial spiritually as it was financially.  One religious leader in attendance called it "awesome."  People from different faiths gave thanks to God and focused on their common desire to help neighbors in need.  New friendships were made.  In a year-end news article called "Looking Back at Good People in a Tough Year", the Providence Journal praised FWC among a handful of organizations that made a positive impact on the community.

The beneficiary of this year's FWC is The RI Community Foodbank.  The RI Community Foodbank began 25 years ago by offering loaves of bread to those in need.  Today it is a program vital to Rhode Island's hunger safety net, feeding over 40,000 hungry Rhode Islanders every month.  One in three of these is a child.  (More can be learned about the vitally important work of the RI Foodbank by visiting their website, at www.rifoodbank.org.)

Beyond a gift to feed the hungry, a gift to FWC signifies support for the idea that we should accentuate that which is common-and commonly good-about different religions.  Not that differences about various religions are unimportant, but simply that by focusing on the commonly held value of helping neighbors in need, we can do a lot of good together.

How can you get involved?

·                     Come on your own, with your family, or bring along some friends to the FWC walk on October 14, 2007, 2:00 pm, ColtState Park, Bristol.  To register in advance and make a donation, please visit www.faithwalkforcharity.org.

·                     Organize a group form your parish.  (Perhaps it could be the youth group or Sunday school class.)  Collect a donation and give corporately.  Bring a banner and walk together.  (Again, group registration and donation form available at www.faithwalkforcharity.org.)

·                     Spread the word.  The success of FWC is critically dependent on spreading the word throughout Rhode Island places of worship.  To help deliver FWC brochures to a church, mosque synagogue, etc., please email FWC at faithwalkforcharity@gmail.com and we will arrange to get brochures and a fact sheet to you.
