eRISEN -Your Episcopal Calendar
Greetings!

Summer must be winding down because Church activities for the fall are flooding my inbox! See all the great offerings in this issue of eRISEN. Rather than switch back to 2x per month in October - I think it will be best to do so in September. Your next issues of eRISEN will be delivered on September 12th & 26th which means that the 11th and 25th are submission deadlines.

Would you like to see book reviews in RISEN magazine? Brief descriptions and reviews of books that inspire, motivate, move or even just entertain us? What are you reading? Would you like to be a guest critic? Contact RISEN@episcopalri.org for details.

The next issue of RISEN is scheduled to come out in early October. It will focus on our upcoming Diocesan Convention and the topic of stewardship.

Peace,
Jessica Gates
Editor of RISEN and eRISEN

Conflict in the Holy Land

Conflict in the Holy Land

Please join us for the continuing series of talks that began in June. Organized by a committee within the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island, these presentations are a follow-up to the Resolution on the Holy Land.  Approved at our Annual Convention in October 2006, this called upon the Diocese to engage in a year of study of this conflict with a view to formulating policies for constructive involvement in the search for a just peace.  Conceived as a coherent whole, the series will be most meaningful if you can attend all talks; however, each presentation can stand on its own.

I. "Religious Self-Criticism and the Middle East: A Christian Reflects"

A Talk By: James Carroll - Author, Playwright, Columnist Boston Globe.

When: Tuesday, September 25, at 7:00 p.m.

Where:  St. Martin's Church, 50 Orchard Ave., Providence

Acclaimed author, playwright, and social and religious commentator James Carroll has an op-ed column in the Boston Globe that has run weekly since 1992. His book Constantine's Sword: The Church and the Jews  A History, published in 2001, was a New York Times bestseller and is the basis of a 2007 documentary film directed by Oren Jacoby.  A former Paulist priest, James Carroll is a regular participant in on-going Jewish-Christian-Muslim encounters. Suggested donation $10

II. "The Conflict in Israel-Palestine: From Mythology to History"

A Talk By: Marsha Pripstein Posusney, Professor of Political Science at Bryant University and Adjunct Research Professor at the Watson Institute of Brown University

When:  Sunday, September 30, at 4:30 p.m.

Where:  Christ Church Parish House, 1643 Lonsdale Ave., Lincoln (at the intersection of Routes 123/122)

Having grown up in a Jewish household and absorbed the enthusiasm and idealization that followed the establishment of the state of Israel, Marsha Pripstein Posusney's views changed as she studied Middle East History and became active in Third World causes. This talk combines rigorous history of the conflict with the story of her personal odyssey.

III. "American Credibility in the Middle East"

A Talk By: Lincoln Chafee, Former Senator and Member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations

When:   Tuesday, October 16, at 7:00 p.m.

Where: Cathedral of St. John, 271 North Main St., Providence

Former Senator Lincoln Chafee needs no introduction in the state that he represented between 1999 and 2006. His position on the Senate's Committee on Foreign Relations gave him a unique vantage point from which to observe the U.S. role in the conflict in Israel-Palestine on which this talk will focus.

Audio-visual and printed materials in Resource Center
To supplement the series of talks on the conflict in Israel-Palestine, books, articles, pamphlets, and DVDs are available at the
Diocesan Resource Center for borrowing  by individuals and parishes.  Among the many materials currently available are two books, one by Jimmy Carter entitled  Palestine Peace Not Apartheid and the other by  Rabbi Michael Lerner called Healing Israel/Palestine.  There are also a video made for PBS by David Shipler entitled Arabs and Jews:Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land and the DVD produced by Anna Baltzer that we showed during our program on June 20, Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photographs.  Both video and DVD lend themselves to group screenings; and if you so desire, we can arrange for someone with knowledge of the conflict to assist in leading discussion.  The collection will be expanding. We ask that you return these materials as rapidly as possible so that they may be available to others.

MUSIC THAT MAKES COMMUNITY

Join the All Saints Company at St. Paul's Chapel in New York City for a three-day workshop on teaching and performing songs by ear. Designed for clergy and music directors, participants will study and practice techniques for introducing accessible and original music without accompaniment or printed materials. With a special focus on smaller liturgies, this is a great opportunity for those leading alternative services, or working in missions and smaller parishes.

Programs will be facilitated by Ben Allaway, Marilyn Haskel, Eric Law, and Donald Schell, who will work with both small groups and the conference as a whole to develop participants' skills and speak to the role of music ministry in smaller congregations.

Music that Makes Community will be held October 4 to 6, with programs from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. each day. The venue is St. Paul's Chapel, 211 Broadway, New York, NY 10007, and the fee for the conference is $150. Participants are encouraged to enquire about scholarship assistance.
