eRISEN -Your Episcopal Calendar |
Greetings!
eRISEN is taking eBREAK for eSUMMER. Your next issue of eRISEN will be Wednesday, August 22nd. That means that all submissions will be due by Tuesday, August 21st. Here is the summer schedule for submissions:
Tuesday, August 21st
Tuesday, September 25th
We will resume 2x per month in October.
Avert your eyes. The new issue of RISEN has hit the stands and while filled with great content., it has a few glaring errors. Namely it is not the Eastertide 2006 issue. It is the Summer 2007 issue. Sue Hunn is our very own Sue Hurn, Director of ECC. And while labled Christmastide 2007 on the inside, I am just not ready to start my holiday shopping yet. A series of edits was lost in translation. Hopefully you will be able to see beyond this and enjoy the contributions of our writers.
Peace, Jessica Gates Editor of RISEN and eRISEN

Diocesan Study of the Conflict in the Holy Land
James Carroll and Lincoln Chafee to speak in autumn
We are currently making final arrangements for dates and venues for talks in September and October by acclaimed author and columnist James Carroll and by our own former-Senator Lincoln Chafee. eRisen will carry the details in August.
Audio-visual and printed materials in Resource Center
To supplement the series of talks on the conflict in Israel-Palestine, books, articles, pamphlets, and DVDs are available at the Diocesan Resource Center for borrowing by individuals and parishes. Among the many materials currently available are two books, one by Jimmy Carter entitled Palestine Peace Not Apartheid and the other by Rabbi Michael Lerner called Healing Israel/Palestine. There are also a video made for PBS by David Shipler entitled Arabs and Jews:Wounded Spirits in a Promised Land and the DVD produced by Anna Baltzer that we showed during our program on June 20, Life in Occupied Palestine: Eyewitness Stories and Photographs. Both video and DVD lend themselves to group screenings; and if you so desire, we can arrange for someone with knowledge of the conflict to assist in leading discussion. The collection will be expanding. We ask that you return these materials as rapidly as possible so that they may be available to others.

The gifts of sunlight, warmth and cool refreshing breezes are given in summertime in New England. Thank You, God.
We intentionally slow a bit and have the opportunity for reflection as individuals, and as communities of faith.
We seek to know, love ,serve and be formed into Christ in every state and stage of our lives. Children seek, Teenagers and Young Adults Seek, and Older Adults Seek.
Life in the Community of Faith give us a grace filled opportunity. We are gathered together in celebration and worship and for education and ministry.

Seven St. Luke's youth chosen for St. Thomas Choir School |
7 Students at St. Luke's East Greenwich Chosen for Select Program at Renowned St. Thomas Choir School
Seven students from the St. Cecilia Choir at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, East Greenwich, have been chosen to attend a special program at the prestigious St. Thomas Choir School in Manhattan. The School, home to the St. Thomas Church Fifth Avenue boys' choir, is the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the US, and only four of such schools in the world. Founded in 1919 and nationally recognized as the most important school for boy choristers, the school has begun an intensive summer course for girls, now in its third season. Just 35 teen girls are accepted each year, based on musical skill, and on personal commitment to their own church choirs. St. Luke's choristers attending this year are Anna Basile, Madeline Jenkins, Emma Powers, Lindsay Sampson, Hope Serdakowski, Kelsey Vivian, and Juliana Walsh.
The course runs from July 29 through August 5, 2007, and will be directed by Sarah E.A. McDonald, Director of Music in Chapel Selwyn College, Cambridge, England. Choristers will have classes in music theory, sight-singing, and theology, plus 4 daily rehearsals. To balance long days of study, the school plans lighter activities such as a picnic in the park, pedicures, and a Broadway show. Music for two special liturgies at St. Thomas Church will include the Missa Brevis by Kodaly, and music by Durufle, Durand, Ireland, and Tallis, usually considered professional repertoire due to its difficulty. Evensong, Thursday August 2nd at 5PM, will feature the girls in the St. Thomas Choir School program. For Sunday Eucharist, August 5th at 11AM, the girls will sing with the men of the professional St. Thomas Church choir.
