From The Terminal Side
By the Rev. Michael Lemons, Ret

It has been a long while since my last offering to you (September). I've have heard that a lot of you have been inquiring after me and my condition. Well, last October the cancer had relapsed and I was put on chemo once again. All was going well until mid- November when I started feeling really bad which was blamed on the chemo. Then the day before Thanksgiving, I collapsed. I was later told that the chemo had caused a bleeding ulcer which in turn irritated my liver which caused a saturation of ammonia in my system that caused my collapse.

The ulcer was a big one with four arteries involved. I was literally bleeding to death. The doctors stop the bleeding, but when attempts were made to raise my blood pressure by transfusions the bleeding would resume. There was one last surgical procedure to stop the bleeding but it was so very risky that the doctors wanted to use it as a last resort. My condition was such that Linda, my wife, was advised that she should gather our family for my passing. I wasn't expected to survive. Everything came to a head when I started vomiting blood. I had to go through the emergency surgery, the only thing left that could save my life. I arrested twice during the surgery, but I made it and the surgery was successful. The internal bleeding was finally stopped.

C.C. Perry, brought me Holy Communion and provided pastoral care. During my stay, I received some twenty- eight units of blood and an unknown amount of saline IV's. I was given so much fluid that my body swelled up with 65 lbs of extra water weight. I had to work with rehab to strengthen my legs in order to walk. It took me another 3 weeks getting home for the water swelling to go down and for me to walk without my walker. During my recovery, I decided I could no longer be effective as rector of St. Luke's and probably should resign. Later, the bishop informed me that some lay leadership of St. Luke's felt that I should be replaced by a healthier priest for the good of the parish and to allow me to take better care of myself. So I decided to retire. My retirement with long-term disability was approved. I am amused that I get more money now than I was paid by St. Luke's. Linda and I attend services at the cathedral where I help at the altar and on occasion preside and/or preach. Soon, I will serve my Lord as supply clergy.

When I was in ICU unable to move, I had a lot of time to think and reflect. When you have cancer you and your spouse can never totally relax. You are stuck with cancer. In spite of working to maintain a positive attitude, there are times when it is a lot harder to do. You are on the ultimate roller coaster ride of ups and downs and unpredictable twists and turns. It is so depressing knowing that the rest of my life, however long, will be filled with tests, waiting, praying and coping day to day. I have kept my positive attitude and I am coping, but I'll tell you it's hard sometimes. The emotions really come into play. To be perfectly honest, I still get angry. I still get scared. I still get frustrated. But I have learned to accept my feelings and by doing so, they no longer control me. Ultimately, it's been my trust in God that gives me the strength to continue on and cope. I have much more to relate but space is limited. So I will write sooner to let you know why I sometimes find a "blessing" hidden in cancer. I thank you all for your support and prayers and remind you to trust the Lord in all things for when you do you'll discover the full meaning of the abundant life promised by Christ Jesus. Christ has risen!
