eRISEN Newsletter
The Episcopal Calendar for RI
January 24th, 2007
Greetings!
We keep growing and growing - this is a big eRISEN with a lot of information. Dig in!

Please note: The updated confirmation dates were not included in the last edition of eRISEN. Those dates are corrected below under Diocesan Events and are also found on the Diocesan website.

On occasion, an event may be listed in more than one section (for example, Diocesan Events and Info from the Resource Center). This duplication serves a purpose as people may skip to the section of eRISEN that holds interest for them. Duplicate listing is at the discretion of the editor and will be subject to available space.

Please use the following format for submitting events to eRISEN:

• Title: name of event / program / workshop
• When: date & time
• Where: location and directions if necessary
• Additional Info: a brief description of the event
• Contact: phone, email, website address

Avoid excessive formatting (or use of MS Publisher) as all information must be converted to html by the editor.

As eRISEN has grown, the number of requests for publication has increased. This means submitted information will need to be concise or will be edited to be concise. Event information that does not use the above guidelines may be returned to the sender for clarification.

An attempt is made to publish all events submitted. On occasion this is not possible due to timing, size, editing requirements, relevance or space. We reserve the right to edit content as necessary.

Please contact the editor at RISEN@episcopalri.org if you have any questions.

Peace,
Jessica Gates
Editor of RISEN and eRISEN

The All Saints' Memorial Church September 11th Scholarship
This annual scholarship was established by All Saints' Memorial Church as a response to the events of September 11, 2001.

Thousands of people had their lives shattered by the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The effects will be felt throughout the world for years to come. Such a tragedy should never again occur, and the parishioners of All Saints' Memorial Church, like all people of conscience, must work to make certain that it does not. Since our parish also feels it must minister to the wider community, it has established a scholarship to accomplish both purposes.

Each year the church will award a scholarship of $500.00 to a graduating high school senior. Any student who is a parishioner of an Episcopal congregation in the Diocese of Rhode Island may apply. Applicants for this scholarship must plan to attend and be accepted in a college or university for the following academic year.

If you have internet access and Microsoft Word, the application can be downloaded from our website at www.allsaintsmemorial.com. You can also request an application by calling the parish office at 751-1747. Applications are due by April 1, 2007

New Home for Epiphany Evening Meal Site
Over one year ago the Providence Fire Marshal informed us that our current meal site did not meet the new RI State Fire Code. They stated that we would have to either upgrade our kitchen equipment or move to another location. The coat of upgrading our existing kitchen at the Epiphany Meal Site would have been great, so we had decided to explore alternative locations. After much intense scrutiny of the surrounding neighborhoods, we have found an alternative location.

As of February 17, 2007, we will begin serving our meals at Grace Church, which is located at 175 Mathewson Street, Providence. Please visit their website for directions, at http://www.gracechurchprovidence.org

Now that we have found our new meal site, we still need your continued support more than ever, to ensure the future of our mission of feeding the hungry. We will continue to start the meal preparation at 2:30 PM, serving at 4:00 PM and the resulting clean-up afterwards.

We wish to thank you for your continued support and please do not hestitate to call either Maureen Palmer (401) 474-9445 or Lauri Messier (401) 481-5806, if you have any questions regarding our new location.

Lauri Messier, for The Epiphany Soup Kitchen Advisory Board:

Travel Opportunity:
RI Episcopalians will recall that our Diocese resolved to undertake a year of study of the conflict in the Holy Land with a view to exploring how we might play a constructive role in furthering its just and peaceful resolution. The following travel experience would richly prepare participants to contribute to this effort.

June 2007 marks the 40th year of the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and Gaza. Sabeel Ecumenical Liberation Theology Center of Jerusalem offers an opportunity to view first hand the ways in which this occupation affects every aspect of Palestinian life: the Wall, settlements, by- pass roads, check-points, and refugee camps. Participants will meet with Palestinians and Israelis working non-violently to end the Occupation and have opportunity to develop strategies for advocacy.

The Sabeel Spring Witness Visit is scheduled for 28 Feb. - 7 March, 2007 and will include nights in Jerusalem, Bethlehem, and the Galilee. All inclusive cost of the 8 night visit is $800 per person (double occupancy; does not include air transport). The Rev. Robert Tobin, retired from the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts, and his spouse Maurine, who have been collaborating with Sabeel for a number of years and spend much of their time in the Holy Land, will be expert guides.

To reserve a space or for further information, contact world@sabeel.org or mimitobin@verizon,net. Priscilla Read (priscillaread@cox.net) is a contact in our diocese.

Travel arrangements may be made through Universal Travel Agency of Jerusalem. (uta-j@zahav.net.il).
