Reflection from The Presiding Bishop
|
|
|
|

[ENS] In this season: light in the
darkness
For the People of the Episcopal Church
The Episcopal Church continues to focus on its
mission of reconciling the world, particularly as it
cares for the least, the lost, and the left out. We
participate in God's mission to heal the world as we
feed the hungry, house the homeless, educate
children, heal the sick, and seek to change the
systems that perpetuate injustice.
We also seek reconciliation with those within and
beyond this church who differ from us theologically.
While we regret the recently publicized departures of
individuals from churches in Virginia and elsewhere in
this Church, and the rejection of this Church's
elected leadership by various bishops here and across
the world, we continue to seek reconciliation.
God is not served by bickering, name-calling, and
division. We recall Jesus' prayer in John's
gospel, "that they may be one" and understand that
to include the whole world -- those who agree and
those who disagree, people of different faith
traditions and none, and the poorest and most broken
among us.
We will continue to engage in that mission of healing
the world, whatever others may decide. In this
season, we affirm the ancient dream of peace in our
day, shalom, salaam, the peace of God which passes
all understanding.
May the Prince of Peace shine in your hearts, and
may that light bless the world.
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness
did not overcome it" (John 1:5).
Shalom,
Katharine

eRISEN Newsletter
The Episcopal Calendar for RI

December 20th, 2006
|
|
|
|
|
Greetings!
This is the last edition of eRISEN for 2006 and I am
thrilled to see how much it has grown! The
feedback received has been wonderful and
encouraging - eRISEN has developed in to a great
calendar tool for Episcopalians in RI.
Since RISEN magazine is now quarterly, almost all
calendar items will be featured in eRISEN
instead of RISEN. Keep encouraging others to sign
up! I also encourage parish administrators to use
eRISEN
to fill their newsletters and annoucements with
information. It is a great way to stay connected with
the diocese and with each other.
The next edition of eRISEN should arrive in your
inboxes January 10th, 2007.
Have a very Merry Christmas with much peace and
success in the New Year!
Peace,
Jessica Gates

AND AS USUAL...
Would you like to see something in eRISEN
that is currently not featured? Let us know by
emailing risen@episcopalri.org.
This is YOUR calendar tool. We send out eRISEN
twice a month to keep you updated on current
events happening around you. Pass it on!
For information on how to submit events (and the
next deadline), see the bottom of this
email.

Episcopal Charities Update

The Gift of Giving and the Season of
Giving
Many thanks and grateful appreciation all our
volunteers, clergy and donors for all their great work
and generous gifts they have bestowed this year. All
of you mean so much to the success of Episcopal
Charities.
Our funded agencies assist battered women and
abused children to seek a safe haven, help to
educate and counsel to help people achieve a better
life. Thousands will have food, heat, shelter,
healthcare and other basic needs. The elderly and
terminally ill receive comfort and a sense of dignity
through their last days. Those who suffer from drug
addiction receive help toward recovery. Immigrants
will be able to read and speak English. Children find
fellowship and learn team-building skills at summer
camps.
As a major outreach arm of the diocese, we can be
proud of this great work and our part in it.
Over 50 years ago, Bishop Higgins heard the call to
reach out into the community to help people in fragile
situations. And, so, the Episcopal Charities mission
began with a desire and responsibility to help those in
need. This tradition continues today because of the
many people who are dedicated and committed to
help the good people of our state.
Episcopal Charities has become a link between
healers and those in need of healing.
Because of a generous endowment given when
Episcopal Charities was founded, all administrative
costs are paid for. Every dollar donated will go
directly to the agencies being funded.
Our work is not finished.
Episcopal Charities has made commitments to 107
social service agencies across the state – from
Woonsocket to Westerly and Aquidneck to
Apponaug. These are agencies that help thousands
and thousands of our neighbors each year. Our goal
is set at $535,000 with pledges totaling $480,000.
We still need $55,000 to reach our commitments.
Have you made your gift for 2006? It’s not too
late.
And, it is the Season of Giving!
There are lots of ways to give to Episcopal Charities
and at the same time help your neighbor, someone
across town or at the other end of the state.
Episcopal Charities has a wide variety of agencies it
supports, and your help is needed.
Do you know someone you would like to honor
because they have done something special in your
life?
Because you love them?
Do you wish to remember someone by way of a
memorial gift?
A year-end gift?
Your gift can be sent to the Episcopal Charities Office
at 275 North Main Street, Providence, RI 02903.
Your gift will do so much for those who have so
little. The Gift of Giving!
If you have any questions please call 274-4500.
Peggy and Diane are happy to answer your
questions.
On behalf of the Board and Staff of Episcopal
Charities we are ...
Wishing You a Blessed, Happy, Healthy
and Safe Holiday Season ! !
Scott Avedisian
Mayor of Warwick
Honorary Campaign Chair
