Investiture Sermon

Investiture
4 November 2006
National Cathedral

The Most Rev. Katharine Jefferts Schori
Presiding Bishop and Primate
The Episcopal Church

Where is home for you? How would you define your home? A friend in Nevada said to me just before I left that he had thought I would only leave Nevada to go home, and in his mind, that meant Oregon. But in the six years I spent there, Nevada became home. The state song is even called, "Home means Nevada." And for a place filled with folk who have come from elsewhere, that is quite remarkable – all sorts and conditions of rootless people trying to grow new roots in the desert.

The Episcopal Calendar for RI
November 8th, 2006
Greetings!
The 216th Annual Convention of the Diocese of Rhode Island took place Oct 27th - 28th. This was my first time attending a diocesan convention. It was truly fascinating to see the process in motion. Maybe it is just the politics behind religion that sparks my interest, but I encourage anyone with any interest to actively seek participation in future conventions. I took some photos, took some notes, but mostly I just took it all in.

Speaking of taking it all in, our very own Rev. Scott Gunn attended the investiture of the 26th Presiding Bishop at the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. In his words from the blog, it was “astonishingly amazingly breathtakingly cool.”

Each person I have heard from who attended the investiture echoes Scott’s sentiments.

The All Saints' Memorial Church September 11th Scholarship
This annual scholarship was established by All Saints' Memorial Church as a response to the events of September 11, 2001.

Thousands of people had their lives shattered by the attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon. The effects will be felt throughout the world for years to come. Such a tragedy should never again occur, and the parishioners of All Saints' Memorial Church, like all people of conscience, must work to make certain that it does not. Since our parish also feels it must minister to the wider community, it has established a scholarship to accomplish both purposes.

Each year the church will award a scholarship of $500.00 to a graduating high school senior. Any student who is a parishioner of an Episcopal congregation in the Diocese of Rhode Island may apply. Applicants for this scholarship must plan to attend and be accepted in a college or university for the following academic year.

If you have internet access and Microsoft Word, the application can be downloaded from our website at www.allsaintsmemorial.com. You can also request an application by calling the parish office at 751-1747. Applications are due by April 1, 2007

Opportunities of Interest
SEWANEE, TN-- The Doctor of Ministry Program of the University of the South begins its thirty-third year this summer.

The Doctor of Ministry program is one of the few in the U.S. which operates only during the summer months. This means that clergy can participate in the program without a major interruption in their parish responsibilities. It affords an opportunity for students to study in an Episcopal seminary in a university setting.

The program stresses the relationship between the practice of ministry, and biblical, historical, and theological knowledge. A Master of Sacred Theology program focusing on research skills is also available. The program usually takes three or four summers to complete.

The D.Min. program consists of 30 semester hours. Students are required to complete a major project, which is a study of some dimension of one's ministry or the ministry of the church. Financial aid is available.

The 216th Annual Convention
THE ADDRESS OF
THE RT. REV. GERALYN WOLF
TO THE 216TH CONVENTION OF THE DIOCESE OF
RHODE ISLAND
28 OCTOBER 2006

The Lord said to Jeremiah,
Stand at the crossroads, and look,
and ask for the ancient paths,
where the good way lies; and walk in it,
and find rest for your souls. (Jeremiah 6:16a)

Our Church and Diocese are standing at a crossroad, at the intersection of competing theological claims and differing interpretations of scripture and polity, of the complex relationship between interdependence and independence, autonomy and the common good.

The world is also standing at a crossroads. Through almost instant communications what is said in one nation is known in all. When war and destruction visit upon one country, refugees flee to another. The rise and fall of major currencies alters the exchange rates around the globe. Bird flu in Asia can reach our soil on the next international flight. What direction is God calling us to follow? What turns must we take?
