Rev'd Scott Gunn - Live from Convention 2006!
|
|
|
|
Greetings!
This is a Special Edition of eRISEN to cover news and
events surrounding General Convention. More
importantly, this issue goes out only moments after
the historic announcement that the first female has
been elected as Presiding Bishop. Your new Presiding
Bishop is Nevada Bishop Katharine Jefferts
Schori, pending approval of the House of
Deputies.
The photo above is the reaction of Rhode Island
representation at General Convention! Snapped just
as the news was announced.
We have received incredible support and positive
responses from people in the diocese about both
eRISEN and the new Blog. Your communications team
encourages you to
keep reading! Share eRISEN and the blog with
your friends and colleagues. We believe we have
most clergy and church administration signed up for
the list, but welcome ANYONE to
subscribe to eRISEN or view and comment on the
Blog.
The Rev. Scott Gunn is still your tireless reporter at
General Convention with multiple blog updates
throughout each day. We are not sure if he is
actually sleeping... be sure to visit the Web Log
(Blog) of the Diocese. Check in daily to read his
updates from Columbus, Ohio. Be sure to bookmark
the Blog!
Parish Administration - will you please post
these two links in your bulletin? The first one is for
the
blog, the second is for people to sign up for
eRISEN.

First Female Presiding Bishop in History of Episcopal Church
[Episcopal News Service] Katharine Jefferts
Schori, bishop of the Diocese of Nevada, has been
elected June 18 by the House of Bishops as the 26th
Presiding Bishop of the Episcopal Church. The House
of Deputies is discussing a resolution to confirm the
election, as is required by church canons. ENS will
post more information after that vote.
According to inside sources, the
House of Deputies burst in to applause upon hearing
she was the choice of the House of Bishops. --

Bishop Wolf Presides Over Friday Service at General Convention
|
|
by Rev. Scott Gunn - from the Blog
Every morning at 9:30 a.m., there is a celebration of
the Eucharist. The musical style varies. There's a
different presider and a new preacher each day.
(Well, I think the Presiding Bishop gets to do his thing
a couple of times.)
Anyway, today Bishop Wolf presided. The focus of
today is on the ministry of women. The preacher was
the Very Rev'd Martha J. Horne, Dean of Virginia
Theological Seminary. Music was tres modern. The
musicians were a group of musicians who normally do
their thing at the Sunday evening EMERGE service at
St. Bart's in NYC. Think urban. Think ancient. The
hymns were things like "Let all mortal flesh keep
silence" but with an electronic beat.

Bishop Wolf Requests Prayers
|
|
Bishop Wolf has asked for continued prayers from
Rhode Island, and elsewhere. Please pray for people
here, that the work here might be filled with due
deliberation, reverent compassion, and the fire of the
Holy Spirit.

Windsor Report - Update as of Sunday 6/18

Special Committee refines pastoral-care, expression-of-regret resolutions
[Episcopal News Service] The Special Legislative
Committee on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican
Communion put final wording to two resolutions during
a pair of committee meetings June 17.
Resolutions A160: "Expression of Regret" and
A163: "Pastoral Care and Delegated Episcopal
Pastoral Oversight" could reach the floor of the House
of Deputies June 18.
In formulating an expression of regret, the committee
replaced the statement proposed by the Special
Communion on the Episcopal Church and the Anglican
Communication. The Special Commission had prepared
the legislation following its extensive study of the
Windsor Report.
Not only did the committee seek to incorporate the
divergent and passionately expressed views from the
June 14 open hearing, which drew more than 1,200
people, the committee also struggled to balance the
divergent perspectives of its own members.

From Columbus: Resolution calls for 'pastoral plan' for possible revision of prayer book
|
|
by Pat McCaughan, Episcopal News Service
[Episcopal News Service] Revise the Book of
Common Prayer and more young people might show
up at General Convention, a youth contingent told
members of the Prayer Book, Liturgy and Music
Committee at a June 16 hearing on resolution D061.
"Our prayer book is already outdated and it is hard for
my generation to relate to everything in it," said a
youth, identified only as Hannah, from Northern
California. She gestured to seven young adults who
joined her at the podium.
"Standing behind me is the future of the church," she
said. "I don't think you want to lose that. Revise the
prayer book and next time there might be more of us
here."
The resolution asks Convention to direct the Standing
Commission on Liturgy and Music to develop a
pastoral plan for future prayer book revision, to be
presented at the 2009 convention in Anaheim,
California.
