Coffee Cantata
"Leischen secretly lets it be known:

no suitor is to come to my house
unless he promises me,
and it is also written into the marriage contract,
that I will be permitted
to make myself coffee whenever I want."

...Brazil is the largest coffee producer in the world?

...Stumptown started a nonprofit to provide cargo bikes to coffee growers in Rwanda to transport their coffee called Bikes to Rwanda?

July 2010
Greetings!

Welcome to the second issue of the Bipartisan Cafe Crier, our new monthly e-newsletter. If you missed the "inaugural" issue, it's archived here.

As we celebrate the nation's 234th birthday, times are as challenging as ever -- the stock market is down, an oil well is gushing crude into the ocean (and Hurricane Alex is threatening to wash even more oil onto the coast of Lousiana), and we are fighting two wars in the Middle East, among other things.

If you're feeling uncertain about our country's future, I invite you to come down to the cafe and check out the walls, which are covered floor-to-ceiling with souvenirs of our country's history, reminding us that we've weathered far worse times and come out alright.

Better yet, come down to have a conversation with your friends and neighbors about how we can make it better.

Have a happy and safe Fourth of July weekend!

regards,

 Extended Hours

Good news for those of you needing a little extra stimulation later in the evening -- Bipartisan has extended its hours to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Come over to grab a cup of coffee and dessert after seeing a movie at Academy!

cuppa joe
 The Origins of "Cuppa Joe"

During World War I, American soldiers were accustomed to drinking coffee - whether by large mugs from the mess hall percolators or dehydrated packets of coffee in their military rations - and heating it with the matches included in their ration packs. The term "Cuppa Joe" came from "G.I. Joe" - who always had his coffee.

FIRST FRIDAY
First Fridays Add a Festive Flair to the Neighborhood

The First Friday of every month, several Montavilla businesses are livening up the strip with art, music and fashion...

Last fall, the owners of Union Rose and the Portland Garment Factory thought it would be fun to have a monthly event showcasing the designers featured in their store. In collaboration with the Montavilla East Tabor Business Association (METBA), that event grew into a full-fledged night of fun and mingling that has come to be known as First Fridays.

METBA secured a grant from the APNBA to promote the event this spring. Here are a sampling of the events going on tomorrow night in the neighborhood:

Releasing P5 Pale Ale

To commemorate the somewhat rundown but extremely cool historical milemarker near Southeast 78th & Stark, the boys at Mt. Tabor Brewing have created an honorary pale ale called the P5 Pale Ale, which they will be releasing tomorrow night (Friday, July 2) at Vintage Cocktail Lounge. They will also have Soapbox Blonde and Asylum Avenue IPA on tap that night! Their Facebook page quips, "...with three taps it now feels like our home!"

In case you didn't know it, the real "P5 marker" is a small stone obelisk-shaped stone monument in front of the auto upholstery business near the Montavilla Farmers Market. The pioneers built it, as they did  several of its kind throughout the city, to mark the 5-mile point from downtown Portland.
