Concept

When I'm working with clients and teaching classes, I'm often asked, "How can I get to know myself better, and where do I start?"

There are many, many wonderful paths to self awareness, and there are a variety of ways to jump-start your journey or move it forward if you're already on your way. Below is a discussion of some of the personality assessments I've used for myself and with my clients.

Discussion

The following tools have helped scores of people explore themselves in more depth. Most can be found online, and prices range from about $10 to $500-plus. Many will require the help of a professional to interpret and utilize to full capacity. If you're interested in trying these out, feel free to contact me for a list of URLs and local practitioners.

Enneagram - This is both a psychological and spiritual assessment. The Enneagram uses nine personality types to help people to recognize and understand typical patterns in human behavior. It covers a variety of factors such as external behaviors, underlying attitudes, one's sense of self, conscious and unconscious motivations, emotional reactions, defense mechanisms, and spiritual potential.

DISC - One of the more easily understood assessments, the DISC program is a model that is based on what is termed "temperaments". It looks at behavioral styles and behavioral preferences, and it categorizes people into one of four categories. Are you outgoing or reserved, task oriented or people oriented? Depending on the combination of each of these, you are either a Driver, an Inspirer, Steady or Cautious.

Astrology - Probably the most complicated in the list, Astrology's premise is that the planets in our solar system and their cyclical movements have a profound influence on our lives from the moment we are born. Each planet represents certain energies and special attributes, and their location in different areas of our life (family, work, travel, home, etc.) help us to understand the potential we have access to at any given time.

Myers Briggs Type Indicator- Using Carl Jung's psychological types, MBTI focuses on "preferences", allowing for understanding of personality styles, urges, desires, motivations, etc. This tool looks at 16 different types based on the way a person gains energy (Extraversion/Introversion), becomes aware of information (Sensing/Intuition), makes decisions on that information (Thinking/Feeling), and deals with the world around them (Judging/Perceiving).

StrengthsFinder - While the other assessments on this list are more psychologically oriented, the StrengthsFinder is geared toward individual talents. It is based on the premise that the most effective people are those who understand and leverage their strengths (e.g., talents). Talents are naturally recurring patterns of thoughts, feelings, or behaviors that can be productively applied. These are the things you do well "without even thinking about it."

Birkman Method - Another way to look at styles, preferences and patterns is through the Birkman Method. Birkman identifies everyday interpersonal style (usual behavior), stress behaviors and related underlying needs, areas of interest and organizational behavior.

Coaching

Many of these tools are used not just for individual awareness, but also for improving personal relationships, career guidance, leadership development, improving management effectiveness, and team development.

Regardless of how they are used, here are a few things to consider to make the best use of your results:
--Are there any major themes highlighted by the results? Any surprises?
--What traits, behaviors, and strengths contribute to your success? (Personal, relational, business, or otherwise)
--Which cause problems for you?
--What does your report tell you about your needs and what motivates you?
--How can you put this information to work in your life (devise a plan)?

It might help to see some examples.

The Enneagram type 2 is known as The Helper. In their most healthy form, 2's are in service to humanity without losing themselves in the process. They take good care of themselves, love without expectations and are joyful, gracious and humble. On less healthy levels, they are the most codependent of the nine types. Less-than-healthy Helpers are sensitive to criticism and have porous or weak boundaries. They feel they must earn love, and therefore their self-esteem depends on closeness with others and the feeling of being needed.

Even with this highly condensed overview of this Enneagram type, it's easy to see that a plan of growth would include learning self-acceptance, boundaries, emotional balance, and putting personal needs first.

Another example uses the DISC tool. It's something that made a huge difference in my own relationship with my husband. He's someone who needs a lot of time to make a decision. I can do it on the fly. This difference in styles caused some strife and conflict in our relationship at times.
Before DISC, I thought there was something wrong with him (<grin>). After DISC, we saw that I'm a high D (Driver), who's decision style is ready-fire-aim, and he's a high I (Inspirer) who's style is ready-aim-talk. Once we read this in a book, we realized that it wasn't personal and we negotiated a new way of making big household decisions that works for both of us, and we feel closer as a result.

So, I hope at this point you can see that these tools can be one way to help you navigate the course of your life more powerfully.

Parting Thought

While personality and strength assessments are very, very helpful, there is a difference between one's personality pattern and their soul pattern. Many of us are not as connected to our soul as we could or want to be. The best use of these tools is for self-discovery, to help you use the personality in service to the soul rather than the other way around.

"Whatever the circumstances of your life, the understanding of your type can make your perceptions clearer, your judgments sounder, and your life closer to your hearts desire." (Isabelle Briggs Myers)
