Making innovation a 'best practice'

Open innovation is moving past a tipping point and becoming a business "best practice" for many companies. How can you make it work in your organization? Here's what we at PTIS see savvy packaging managers doing so packaging innovation supports their companies' business strategies.

  • Expanding their mindset to embrace open innovation. This includes team building

Product sum is greater than its parts

Consumers see products as a sum of attributes: The product, package, brand equity and more. We've put that together into what we call the PTIS Product FormulaŠ. By using it, you can gain shelf impact and the best perception of the product. Key elements:

  • The package and how it conveys product attributes
  • Consumer experiences, both good and bad
  • Sustainability. It could be tiebreaker

Assess your packaging with a snapshot

See how you stack up against competitors. Take photos of your packages and your competitors' packages and compare them. Take photos of different-size packages, varieties, and price points and insert them into software like Excel. Look for:
  • Shelf impact in decoration and structure
  • Innovation. How do new benefits offer value?
  • Performance. Have packages changed for better distribution efficiency?
