Harness 'lead users' to power innovation
Out on the furthest edge of innovation ideas are "lead users." They need more than the market gives them, so they improvise solutions. Learn their core needs and you may be able to develop innovation that can work for an entire market segment.
  • Have a cross-functional project team
  • Look in your target market for unusual solutions
  • Do secondary research on the market to develop names of lead users

Where you stand in packaging capability
Here's how to see where you stand against an industry packaging management benchmark. Take the PTIS/Packaging World survey and we'll send you a report on industry norms. The data could be a valuable tool to help you shape your capabilities and sell ideas to your managment. Key survey elements measure:
  • Package engineering: How important is it to you and how well are you equipped to handle it
  • Packaging research and development
  • Specification management
  • Other key packaging management functions

Ask this to assess sustainability
A panel at Pack Expo '10 raised a series of questions to ask in assessing if packaging options actually deliver sustainability. The panel, which included PTIS Principal Brian Wagner, dug deeper into sustainability claims by asking questions including:
  • How does the technique work from a holistic perspective?
  • Does the technology work in the real world?
  • Where can structural innovations add benefits?
