Focus on the Positive |

So why do we always worry about all the things that can go wrong, all of the negative issues? Wouldn't it be more productive to focus on the positive -- the outcomes we want?
Several years ago I was helping out at my kayak and canoe club "newbie" day. One of the experienced paddlers was leading a group of new paddlers around obstacles in the lake. And she gave some great advice -- never focus on the object you're trying to avoid because you'll end up paddling straight for it. Instead focus on where you want to paddle.
It should be the same for our businesses. Don't spend your time and energy focusing on all of the negatives. Focus on what you want to get accomplished -- and it will happen!

Some LinkedIn Don'ts |

A Fast Company article listed three "don'ts" when using LinkedIn. They are:
- Don't use LinkedIn's generic e-mail templates. Personalize requests to connect.
- Limit your social updates in your LinkedIn status. I'm embarrassed to admit that when I first joined Twitter, I messed up my settings so that every one of my Tweets posted on my LinkedIn status.
- Don't ask for endorsements from people you don't know. That should be obvious.
There are a few other don'ts that I can add. When you're sending the request to connect, don't be lazy and check you're a friend when I don't know you. If we share a group, check that. Make sure your photo is professional looking -- your children and your pets are adorable, but they shouldn't be part of your LinkedIn profile.

Book of the Month . . . Kiss That Frog! |

The subtitle of Brian Tracy and his daughter Christina Tracy Stein's new book is 12 Great Ways to Turn Negatives into Positives in Your Life and Work. It's a short, easy to read guide, 12 chapters long, to help you turn frogs into princes/princesses. Chapter titles include: "Imagine Your Handsome Prince"; "Drain the Swamp"; "Look for the Beauty in Frogs"; and "Kiss Your Ugly Frogs Good-bye".
One of my favorite ideas is "Decide what's ideal before you decide what's possible". Rather than starting by thinking of all the restrictions and limits, think of what can be done.
Small disclaimer: some of you may remember that I wasn't very fond of Eat That Frog!, Brian Tracy's book on procrastination. This book is different. Although I don't agree with everything in it, I'm enjoying reading it and will try to put some of its ideas into practice.
