  • Smart Ways to Keep Your Smartphone Charged (or Why Duracell Rocks!)
    Golden Temple, Kyoto

I love my smartphone (see previous issues in the archives when I discussed whether to get one and once I got it). The biggest problem, however, is that it is a power hog and drains the battery. I often have to recharge it mid-day if it's going to make it through the evening. This is particularly a problem when I'm traveling. If I'm in my car, it's okay as I have a car charger.

Recently, however, I flew out to Oregon for a long weekend. I was renting a car, but was afraid to bring my regular car charger as I was sure I would forget and leave it in the car. Duracell saved the day. I bought a wonderful 3-in-1 charger at Radio Shack. When it's all together it plugs into an outlet (top photo). Pulling it apart provides a car charger. And pulling out the cord provides a USB plug. Plus it comes with multiple charging tips so it can be used with various other electronics that need charging. It worked beautifully! (It also came in handy during Hurricane Irene -- I used the USB charger to charge the phone from my laptop.)

    Autumn, Already?
    Samsung Intercept

It is officially autumn, even if the weather still feels like summer (will this humidity never go away?) But school is back in session, the stores are all selling Halloween items, and a few leaves are starting to change color. One of my favorite poets, Robert Frost, describes how we feel when the seasons change (last stanza from his poem "Reluctance".

Ah, when to the heart of man
Was it ever less than a treason
To go with the drift of things,
To yield with a grace to reason,
And bow and accept the end
Of a love or a season?

Book of the Month . . . The Zen of Social Media Marketing
Nice Girls Just Don't Get It

So, why another book on social media? This is truly a hands-on guide to using social media as part of your organization's marketing efforts. Shama Hyder Kabani provides "An Easier Way to Build Credibility, Generate Buzz, and Increase Revenue" (book's subtitle) with her new book. And it's "the last social media guide you'll ever need", as she provides on-line updates plus a downloadable workbook to help you implement what you're reading about.

Why Zen? "The Zen of social media marketing is about understanding the mind-set of people who are using social media and then using it to your advantage." Kabani uses case studies, profiles, and step-by-step instructions. She covers websites and blogs, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, video, and creating a Social Media Policy for your organization.

It's a relatively small paperback, which makes it easy to tuck in your bag and take with you for reading on the go. I find it easy to read and very, very practical. I've printed out the 10-page workbook and tucked it inside the book so I can use it as I read. As Kabani explains, "If you actually sit down and work through this workbook, I promise you will have the framework for your very own social media marketing plan."

Quote of the Month: "Choose being kind over being right and you'll be right every time " -- Richard Carlson
