Saving Japan |
|
The earthquake and tsunami in Japan have been devastating. Japan is
a beautiful and wonderful country and it makes me so sad to see
what has happened. I've been lucky enough to visit twice (the
photo is one I took of the Golden Temple in Kyoto). We have friends who live in
Mishima, which is south of Tokyo; they are fine. They have had some
power outages and there is a lack of some food basics at the stores.
The Japanese people are very resilient (and patient) and will get
through this. However, they aren't used to asking for help, which makes
sending them aid very difficult. I found several good organizations to
donate to: The Japan
Society (a non-profit organization based in NYC which is sending
money directly to groups in Japan); Mazon,
and the Japanese
Red Cross Society (through Google). There are other organizations
and events also raising funds for Japan.

Evolving Words (According to the AP Stylebook) |
|
And the big news in the world of word usage is that the AP Stylebook announced on March 18 that they will now recognize "email" rather than "e-mail" (The NY Times is staying with e-mail for the time being). One year ago they changed to "website" rather than "web site" (which I try to remember to use).
In June, 2010, the AP Stylebook added 42 new guidelines for Social Media.
The 2011 AP Stylebook will be out in May. In the meantime, you can get information on their website, which includes an Ask the Editor section. You can also follow them on Twitter at APStylebook.
Not to be outdone, the Oxford English Dictionary (OED) just released its March 2011 OED Online and has including some interesting "initialisms" (abbreviations that use the first letter of each word): LOL, OMG, IMHO, TMI, and BFF. Even more surprising, they also included the heart symbol, which stands for the verb "love". Here's the full article on the March 2011 update.

Book of the Month . . . Enchantment: The Art of Changing Hearts, Minds, and Actions |
|
I was enchanted by Guy Kawasaki's new book, Enchantment. Guy defines enchantment as "the process of delighting people with a
product, service, organization, or idea" with an outcome of "voluntary
and long-lasting support that is mutually beneficial." This wonderful process can be used
for both business and personal relationships. Guy starts by teaching us
how to be likeable and how to be trustworthy, the two things needed so
that people will let you enchant them. This is part of what makes the
book enchanting, Guy expects us to be nice, ethical people who use our
power of enchantment for good. I'm looking forward to using what I've
learned to develop new relationships and improve existing ones.
Quote of the Month: "The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off." Gloria Steinem (in honor of Women's Herstory month)
