  • What's New?

My web site is new! My brilliant web diva, Arlene Levine, Arlene Levine Design, created a wonderful, new look for my web site. And while we were at it, I've updated the content. You will find new writing samples on my Portfolio page, new testimonials, and new descriptions of my services. I've even added some fun quotations about writing.

And I've further entered the realm of PR2.0 by starting a blog (see the link below). I'm still not entirely sure how or why people will read my blog, but when the mood strikes, I'll write something. You can also find me on LinkedIn -- the business social networking site (as differentiated from Facebook). If we're not connected and you'd like to be, send me an e-mail (or invite me through LinkedIn).

In the course of updating my web site, I have learned a lot about SEO (search engine optimization). When I originally set up a web site, I never expected anyone to find me on the web. After all, there are thousands of freelance technical writers out there, so why would my web site come up in a search. The main purpose of my web site was to showcase my writing samples.

Amazingly, people have found me on the web. Not necessarily people I want to work with (e.g., a Holocaust survivor in California who wants someone to help him write some magazine articles -- I suggested he find someone closer to home who focused on that type of writing). I'm hoping, however, that with some of the new behind-the-scenes features of my web site, more suitable clients will find me. And, with all of this new-found knowledge, I can help you with the content of your web site.

    Wishing on a Star?

So, are you actively working on your 2010 business goals or are you just "wishing on a star" and hoping they will happen? The latest "Leadership Moment" e-mail from the ladies at LeadStar (Angie and Courtney, authors of Leading from the Front) is called "There is No Time Like the Present". They ask how we're doing on our business "resolutions" or goals for the new year. Their embarrassing questions include "Have you even taken that first step yet?" And they wonder if part of the problem is that we are overwhelmed by what we are trying to achieve.

What they suggest is doing some "reverse planning". Start by choosing a date when you want to be done. Then go back, month by month, and set achievable milestones until you reach today. You now have a starting point with manageable steps. Courtney and Angie end with "There is no time like the present. Best of luck to you on your journey!"

Visit the Lead Star web site and sign up for your own Leadership Moment e-mails -- they are inspiring. And if you haven't read the book yet, Leading from the Front: No Excuse Leadership Tactics for Women, do it! (You can read my review in the Fall, 2008, issue of my e-letter.)

    Personality Not Included

In *Personality not included *Why Companies Lose Their Authenticity--And How Great Brands Get It Back, Rohit Bhargava, social media guru, SVP of Digital Strategy, and a founding member of the 360 Digital Influence group at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, explains, "Personality is the unique, authentic, and talkable soul of your brand that people can get passionate about." He divides his book in two parts: part one describes how to develop a personality (with lots of real world examples), while part two is a resource guide with techniques, guides, and tools to actually make it happen. Rohit practices what he preaches -- his personality shines through the book, making it fun to read. I had the privilege of meeting and hearing Rohit in person, which is why I bought the book. (If you'd like to know more about this book, visit my Blog.)
