Greetings!
Only 11 days left to get your $18,000 in 2011! We all know that time seems to pass much faster then we would like. With that thought in mind, if you are looking to submit your claim for $18,000 in 2011, by demonstrating Meaningful Use, the last day to start your reporting period is October 1st, 2011. Remember that we have many resources to help with your Meaningful Use action plan. The time is definitely NOW to start this process, it generally takes about 9 weeks from signing contracts to go-live. Then approximately another 4 weeks to become comfortable using an EHR in your practice. After that you have to use it continuously for a 90 day reporting period. So as you can see, if all the stars are aligned, and you have not yet selected an EHR solution for your practice, and you started today, the earliest you could start reporting to get your initial payment of $18,000 is April or May of 2012. It's important to remember that if you don't qualify in 2012 you will lose $5,000 of the total available dollars,and if you leave it until 2013 you will lose a total of $20,000. One of the often overlooked core measures to meet Meaningful Use is Measure 15. This states that:
"Objective: Protect electronic health information created or maintained by the certified EHR technology through the implementation of appropriate technical capabilities.
Measure: Conduct or review a security risk analysis in accordance with the requirements under 45 CFR 164.308(a)(1) and implement security updates as necessary and correct identified security deficiencies as part of its risk management process"
As a result of the revised HITECH Act of 2009 the penalties for non compliance have increased 10 fold. As an example, for violating HIPAA and exposing protected patient information the Maximum has gone from a $100 per violation to $50,000 with a maximum of $1.5 million. So we see that the Government is treating this matter very seriously. Celebrate National Health IT Week by making EHR's part of your practice
|  Health IT Week In a proclamation on Monday, President Obama declared the week of September 11 - 17 as National Health Information Technology Week. In his proclamation, President Obama spoke about how health IT connects doctors and patients to more complete and accurate health records and how tools like EHRs and electronic prescriptions help patients and providers make safer, smarter decisions about health care. By providing financial incentives to those providers who successfully meet meaningful use of certified EHRs, CMS hopes to encourage providers and hospitals to adopt this technology. Providers are already beginning to see the benefits of using EHRs. Recently, CMS interviewed providers at a Delaware Meaningful Use Recognition Ceremony on how EHRs are positively affecting their practices. Dr. Jerome Abrams, a doctor of Family Medicine from Delaware, whose practice successfully attested to meeting meaningful use, said that EHRs have allowed his practice "to capture information on patients a lot more efficiently and a lot more completely." Over 90,000 providers and hospitals have registered for the Medicare and Medicaid EHR Incentive Programs, and over $652 million has been paid to providers and hospitals that have successfully demonstrated meaningful use.
