Remembering the Past . . . .

San Jacinto MonumentAs Texans, we are rightfully proud of our state's history. This Saturday, April 21, 2012, marks the 176th anniversary of the Battle of San Jacinto - the last battle of the Texas Revolution. You probably know the story by heart. General Sam Houston and his Texian army surprised General Santa Anna's napping soldiers late in the afternoon. Rallying around the battle cries of "Remember the Alamo, "Remember Goliad" the Texian's surprise attack was over a mere eighteen minutes later. Victory and Independence had been won. The rest, as they say, is history.

This weekend, take time to remember the sacrifices of all those who participated in the quest for Texas independence. As Texans and as Houstonians we are the direct beneficiaries of their pioneer courage, their willingness to sacrifice and their vision of a brighter future.

Looking Forward to the Future . . . .

SAA TigersAs residents of District J, we have another event to celebrate this weekend: the Grand Opening and Blessing of the newly constructed St. Agnes Academy Athletic Complex located at the intersection of Fondren and Bellaire. Sunday afternoon will present a wonderful opportunity to congratulate Sister Jane Meyer, Head of School, and all of St. Agnes' teachers, students and parents as they begin a bright new future with these new, state-of-the-art athletic facilities.   These playing fields and other amenities will not merely provide a much needed sports venue for the young ladies who attend St. Agnes, they will also be an integral component of the much needed re-vitalization of this portion of District J and Southwest Houston. Congratulations and thanks to St. Agnes for achieving this wonderful accomplishment and for providing our community with a brighter future.

Football is coming to HBU!

HBU HuskiesThe Houston Baptist University Huskies are getting a football team!   On April 9, HBU announced the addition of Vic Shealy as the first head football coach for the Huskies.  The Huskies will begin playing a limited exhibition-type schedule in 2013, and will join the Southland Conference in 2014.

Shealy comes to HBU with a wealth of experience.  Most recently, he was the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Kansas University.  He has also been head coach at Azusa Pacific University and assistant at Richmond, UNLV, Air Force, Austin Peay State, Mars Hill College and a graduate assistant at Baylor.

HBU has also announced plans to build a 10,000 seat football stadium on their campus.  While the stadium is being designed and constructed, the Huskies are planning on renting a venue for home games.

Let's give Coach Shealy a hearty Husky Houston welcome!
