News, Events and Information About Your Fellow
Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce Members

Dear Chamber Member,

Happy New Year from the Oxford Area Chamber of Commerce!

A new year and already some exciting changes for OACC!  The Chamber office has successfully relocated to the first floor of 38-A South Third Street as a client of chamber member, Synergy Virtual Offices, LLC.  The space still provides street-level exposure for the Chamber but adds the benefits of enhanced meeting and classroom space all at costs equal to or slightly less that our previous location.  All contact information remains the same.

As a result of our elections at the December General Membership Meeting we have three new Board members and and new Executive Committee.  Please congratulate our new President, Richard Hannum of WSFS bank and welcome the following board members:

Sylvia Justice, National Penn Bank
Jim Price, Custom Machine & Design, Inc.
Kita Williams, Synergy Virtual Offices, LLC

Douglas Fasick will assume the role of Chairman and stay active as an ex officio member of the Board of Directors.

Lastly, OACC is proud to be able to offer a new benefit of membership.  As part of the Constant Contact Chamber Program, members are now eligible for discounts on prepaid subscriptions to email, event and social media marketing and surveys.  Look for a separate email with details soon.

Reminders:
  • eBlast submissions are due by the 4th Wednesday of each month to be included in the following month's eBlast. Take advantage of this opportunity to connect with fellow chamber members each month.  Submit your events, promotions, sales, specials and announcements to [email protected]
  • The next Board Meeting will be on Tuesday, January 10th at 8:00 am in the new office at 38-A South Third Street. Members always welcome!

Wishing you all the blessings of the season!

Judy Abbruzzesi
OACC Executive Director

You get them all the time...unwanted emails, some benign, some potentially malicious.  The Chamber email account is no exception.  In recent weeks two incidents in particular serve as reminders to us all that it is critically important to keep anti-virus and anti-SPAM software up to date and running.

In early December an email went out, seemingly from the Chamber email account, that simply stated "QUIT."  While many SPAM blockers recognized this as SPAM, others did not.  That is why it is also important to remember that if an email looks suspicious, DO NOT OPEN IT!

More recently, the Chamber received an email in it's SPAM folder that claimed that a complaint against the Chamber had been filed with the Better Business Bureau.  The email prompted the reader to click a link for more information.  Just a quick Google search provided this alert:

Beware of Bogus Email Complaint Reports

11/23/2011

November 23, 2011 - Washington, DC.  The BBB is warning the business community to beware of an ongoing malicious e-mail that pretends to be from the BBB about a complaint filed against the company.

Businesses from across the United States have reported receiving suspicious e-mails from a variety of email address, such as [email protected] or [email protected], with the subject line "Complaint #" followed by an eight to nine-digit number. The emails appear to come from the BBB national office, the Council of Better Business Bureaus in Arlington, VA.

The body of the e-mail states: "The Better Business Bureau has received the above-referenced complaint from one of your customers regarding their dealings with you. Please review this matter and advise us of your position. As a neutral third party, the Better Business Bureau can help to resolve the matter. Often complaints are a result of misunderstandings a company wants to know about and correct." The email also encourages the recipient to click on a link provided in the email to respond to the complaint. Variations of the email have numerous grammatical errors.

Because the message is fraudulent, the BBB advises any business that receives this e-mail to take the following steps:

  • Do not click on any links or reply to the message
  • Forward the message to [email protected]
  • Completely delete the message from your inbox
  • Run a virus scan on your computer if you did click on any links.

Complaints that the Washington DC & Eastern PA BBB email come from only one address: [email protected].

These types of phishing attacks are not uncommon. The FTC, IRS and UPS have also been subject to similar attacks.
